Lozz196
I think, from recall, one of the reasons ads use older songs is something to do with publishing or ownership rights.
TimR
So what he is actually saying is there are no bands getting number 1 hits. All the big hits are now being created by solo artists. How many of the solo artists write as solo artists and how many have massive teams of writers is another discussion. He's conviently forgotten the endless parade of solo 80s artists from Stock, Aitken and Waterman.
Woodinblack
Bands are not just the current way of doing music. Doesn't seem that shocking really.

Maybe not shocking, but surprising that there has been such a complete shift in the most consumed music is created.
Gasman
Love the use of the sweet 60s term 'Hit Parade' - in today's multi-channel streaming world it must surely be meaningless... (unless someone brings back Top of the Pops or the Sunday evening BBC radio chart show!)

So get the hell out of here and others get your belowed bands as close as you can. This is just a friendly recommendation.

Is it that much of a shift? I just looked at the wiki entry for top selling single in a given year ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_singles_by_year_in_the_United_Kingdom ) and the majority of singles going back to 1952 are in an individual name, rather than a group,. When you look at those figures, it is only the 70s and 80s where more songs were made by groups, the 50s, 60s, 00s, 10s and 20s were mostly individual artists (or featuring in the case of the 10s) and the 90s were a tossup. Only in so much as the rights owners of older songs are less likely to object because anything that boost the profile of the work will be welcome. Contemporary artists may be less keen to have their music used to push products.
JoeEvans
Playing rock music in four and five-piece bands will be a specific era in music, just as big-band jazz was a specific era. It might be that we're already in the tail end of the era.
PaulWarning
Rock and Roll will never die, don't know about that, but it's certainly not mainstream anymore
