Ovation Magnum II Fretless with Graphic EQ
£1800
Harrow

I was fortunate enough to play this on Tuesday evening. I expected a one-trick pony with a thumpy low sound, but it's surprisingly musical and versatile.

I didn't think it was especially heavy either, though it's not featherweight.

A lovely thing all round.

Mysteriously I find this both very ugly and strangely attractive at the same time. The body shape, and all that hardware - it's like the person who built it had read a description of electric basses but never actually seen one. I think it's probably the kind of thing I could fall in love with - unique.

Yes, it has something of those post-war visions of future technology about it, almost as if it was actually designed as a school project in the late 50's, the designer promising themselves that one day they would make it real. Then 20 years later.....

... a designer of military helicopters for use in Vietnam thought, "I know, why don't I make basses as well as military helicopters ... the overlap is obvious".

Forgive my ignorance, but what's that on the back of the headstock?

First person to say 'tuners' gets a sit in the naughty corner.

CR2032 battery holder for the (removable) LED strip along the neck.
