Pow_22
As you may have seen im looking to move on my precision bass for a more comfortable jazz bass. I bought the bass a few years back from Bass Bros where it was advertised as a 1984 MIJ 57 RI bass. Ive loved it ever since and swapped the original pups out but now im looking to trade a query has been raised. Whilst the neck date, serial and neck heel stamps match up there is a query around why it doesnt say ‘mij’ or ‘cij’ with the serial on the neck. Its not something ive noticed or queried before but now its been pointed out has made me do some digging. As per the pics the neck date states December 1985, serial number tallies up and the neck model stamp matches but why would it not note anywhere that it is MIJ/CIJ? ive also attached the orginal Bass Bros ad. Any thoughts/queries etc much appreciated https://bassbros.co.uk/sold-basses/1984-fender-japan-pb-57-precision-bass-reissue-mij/
Doctor J
Could be that day they ran out of Made in Japan transfers or the person doing the neck that day forgot to put it on. The bass looks very clearly genuine otherwise. There are plenty of pics here to refer to. https://en.audiofanzine.com/electric-fretted-bass/fender/precision-bass-japan-57-reissue/medias/pictures/p.5.html Edited August 2 by Doctor J
Hellzero
This not against you @Pow_22, but how could it be a 1984 instrument when the neck is from the second part of December 1985? Fender never owned a DeLorean, so it would be great if people like Bass Bros stopped talking nonsense even if the serial number is linking it to 1984 ... up to 1987, which is here the missing part for the E series. You date instruments by their youngest part, not the oldest. This is what your serial number gives: Concerning the missing "Made in Japan", it may have been omitted as @Doctor J said or carefully removed by a previous owner...
Bassassin
MIJ would normally be on the headstock face, it's possible that for some reason it's had a face refin & the original decal's been replaced with a generic one. The s/n & heel do suggest it's an MIJ bass (although E serialisation also appears on late 80s/90s Korean Squiers from Young-Chang) - wondering if it could've been an MIJ Squier originally?
