bassbiscuits
So Aerosmith have officially announced they are retiring from touring as Steven Tyler’s throat problems are more serious than thought and he’s unlikely to fully recover. Such a bummer. An absolutely awesome band, one of my favourite lead singers ever alongside Freddie and Bon, but entirely understandable. I’d hate to see a band limping on despite being below par (as sadly so many older performers persist in doing). I don’t imagine for a second young Steven Tyler imagined he’d still be performing in his 70s anyway, so he’s had a hell of a run. The only time I got to see them was at Download in 2010 when they blew me away. Absolute legends. 4
Lozz196
I’ve never seen them live but think that it’s a wise decision, it’s the singer that sells the band and it sounds like he is a bit more aware than some. And as said, he’s had a good innings.
MacDaddy
I saw them at Hyde Park 2007. Tbh was underwhelmed. They were a bit static, didn't really get the great showman bit from Tyler. His voice was ok though.
SurroundedByManatees
They've been in action for almost 55 years... At one point it's likely that there happens something that makes a band quit. They are one of the first bands I started listening when getting interested in good music (around the age of 12). Get your wings was the first album I got on cdr from an uncle with a massive rock/metal collection. Along with the early Metallica stuff. I still prefer Aerosmith's '70s albums generally. The only time I saw them was in a medium size venue in the Netherlands in 2010, with reunited Stone temple pilots as support act! They were great, as was STP.
12stringbassist
Steve Tyler has shredded his voice for decades and it's a miracle he managed to do it for as long as he did. Sad for them and their fans that they've called it a day as far as playing live goes. It's not clear as to whether they will make any more music or not. I hope that they feel they can. Cato
Saw them in 1989 on the Pump/Permanent Vacation tour during what was probably their best period. Tyler and Perry had been clean for a few years, their back catalogue was outstanding, the two albums they were touring were amongst their strongest and they hadn't yet started churning out all the shmaltzy 'paint by numbers' ballads that pretty much stopped me listening to them a couple of years later. Tyler is probably the most energetic front man I've ever seen, spinning all over the stage, doing sommersaults and backflips. The whole band were spot on. I imagine all the gymnastics got toned down a while ago, but that's how I'll always remember them. Definitely think they're doing rhe right thing by calling it a day now rather than attempting to to limp on or trying to replace Tyler for the remaining gigs. That would have been an awful end to a (mostly) fantastic career. Edited August 5 by Cato
bassbiscuits
Agree 100% @Cato Permanent Vacation and Pump were a quality 1-2 pair of albums, right up there with Get Your Wings, Toys in the Attic and Rocks from their 1970s heyday. They were newly clean and still young enough to be fiery and energetic. More ballads started creeping in after that, along with more outside writers and much longer between albums. But yeah under the current circumstances it’s the right choice I think.
RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE
It's hard to explain my feelings about Aerosmith . I had a few of their earlier albums , but never kept them . I have however got the Permanent Vacation and Pump albums , which I purchased at the time . I think they're great . Very '...80s which I like . I saw them on the Pump tour at Hammy Odeon which I was lucky to see at the time , as they were used to playing arenas and apparently the stage set was stripped down. It was a great gig ! I find their catalogue very patchy after that , and imho they're mostly going to be known for I don't wanna miss a thing and walk this way . Dream on may be rightly remembered also . With Aerosmith , they always seem slick and professional on tv , videos etc . They were a mess for many periods also , as with a lot of rock bands . There have been many stories over Steve Tyler's erratic behaviour over the last few years , and tbh I thought that he was too old for that stuff . I think he was a great , slick frontman . Did Aerosmith take some of their influences from the faces / mott the hoople etc ? They treated Rush very badly among other support bands I'd imagine at the time . Fair play for Geddy reminding Joe Perry when he was supporting them . I agree with others , and think it's best call it a day now . JottoSW1
Should Vince Neill retire from singing? No unkind responses please and I KNOW he has earned lots more MUNNEE than me ...
hiram.k.hackenbacker
Been a fan since what seems like forever. Saw them at The Toxic Twin Towers Ball at Wembley in ‘99. What a gig! Sad to hear ST is hanging up his mic, but it sounds like a sensible move.

I thought Crue were quite cool when they signed those contracts a few years ago to prevent them from working together again - they could have gone out on a high and in quite a quirky way if they’d stuck to that. I’ve never seen Crue live, but the recent stuff I’ve seen online doesn’t show them at their best. I appreciate it’s their livelihood, people will still pay to see them and it’s probably hard to just stop anyway, but I think it’s time for them to call it a day. I totally appreciate that other people might think differently though and that’s ok. I’m not in charge of anything!
Lozz196
I saw Crue last year, VN although not great by any means was a bit better than when I saw them in 2007 & 2011ish. I agree they should have stuck to the contract at least to not play live again.
meterman
Never been a fan of Aerosmith, except for the single they did with RUN DMC, but just because Steven Tyler’s voice is shot shouldn’t mean they have to pack up for good. They should get Brian Blessed in on lead vocals and continue touring and making albums. Then I might get into them. 👍

NancyJohnson
I've seen Aerosmith a few times, sadly most were a massive disappointment. I had an opportunity to see them in the late 1976 at Hammersmith Odeon; I was besotted with my mates sister, older than me, she was. My mum was working in Shepherds Bush for a few days and swung by the box office and bought me two stalls tickets. Sadly, my mates suster turned me down. Ack. RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE
Mixed feelings about motley crue .. I saw them with some new friends at the time on the theatre of pain tour , with cheap trick supporting. The night Nikki sixx od'd They were into crue , and while only having the theatre of pain album at the time I was.more into thrash . A gigg's a gig so I went . They put on a really good show . I saw them a couple of times supporting others at donington , and imho they were awful at best . imho, when they signed the deal to finish, they should have kept to their word . They now have that 'osbourne's'' 'celebrity vibe , which to me is embarrassing . Then again , I'm as old as them and many younger fans still have a chance to see them , which means a lot to them . As for anyone replacing Steve Tyler 🤔I don't think anybody can tbh as most people look at him and Joe Perry - the toxic twins (;something like that ) .. Then again who would have thought axl would front ac/dc ? Edited August 7 by RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE
bassbiscuits
I wanted to hate Axl/DC but it sounded great to me. If anything I struggle to listen to long periods of Brian’s voice, however much I love the band. Steven Tyler’s voice has always been ace though. There probably are other singers who could replace him live but it wouldn’t be the same - he’s such a visual part of the band (then again who’d have imagined Adam Lambert covering for Freddie would work?).
Bassfinger
You can't help but love Aerosmith. A shame, but better to bow out with dignity rather than try and plough on with a shredded voice and sully the legend, like Ian Anderson has been doing for 40 years.
meterman
I swear, just replace Tyler and Perry with a younger, more capable pair for touring. Tyler's been half-àřśéd about it for years anyway. I doubt many folks would miss him like crazy. Like I said earlier, just get Brian Blessed in on lead vocals (he won't even need a mic, so money saved there) and get Jeremy Clarkson in on lead guitar (he'd look funny as fark with eye liner and leather trousers and tie-dye scarves and all that) - audiences would be too busy laughing at the state of Clarkson to pay any attention to the actual music. Then they could just phone it in and mime like Britney Spears. Job done 👍
