Can anyone tell me anything regarding the history of this particular machine?

Other than that it is a Hohner Professional Series HGV-B offset flying V, Brass hardware and built like a tank.

Someone has had the frets out but no other visible mods. Hohner's own resource https://www.hohner.de/fileadmin/documents/service/guitars/Gitarren_Hohner-HistoricalModels.pdf shows no info at all. Was this a prototype, a short-run or was it pulled off saale? Why would it not appear in the archive, nor anywhere on the web, so far as I can find. Any hive-mind help, please?

This won't help the OP but Hohner have form for having undocumented instruments with their name on them. I used to own a very nice electric 12-string guitar with a Jazzmaster style light blue offset body and three lipstick pickups. However if you did a search on the model name/number all it brought up were photos of a black Telecaster-shaped instrument with two humbucking pickups, which is the version described in the PDF. However looking at the other electric 12-string models listed there is one where the description of the body matches mine (although doing a search for that model brings up no images), so maybe it was "Frankensteined" together from two different instruments.

So for the OP, it might be worth having a look to see if you can find a model with the right neck (and model number) and looking separately for a Hohner V-shaped bass body with the correct pickup configuration.

Hohner Professionals were made in Korea by Cort, mid 80s onward. This based on a Jackson Randy Rhoads knockoff & that's firmly 80s hair metal-era, so it's probably from approx. '84-'90. Cort uses dateable serial numbers so it may be possible to get a year of manufacture from that, if there is one.

A brief dig around turned up a French auction site listing for the guitar version of the same thing.

And that's yer lot!

Why would anyone...?

If that's " Why would anyone remove the sticker ?" .

As I remember it, in years gone by few of us gave a monkey's where or when our basses were made so why leave a grubby sticker on it 🙂

If you were really interested there was no internet databases to look up so your only option was write to customer service and ask.

If they replied then you faced the real kicker, who could you share this wonderful information with ? There were no bass forums or gear pages, no collectors clubs or owners groups putting out Xerox magazines once a year. Knowing the year of manufacture or model had value for a couple of American brands but other than that nobody was bothered.

On the early made in the US Reverend instruments the serial number was written on the back of the headstock in Sharpie. When I bought mine second hand it had already been reduced to a near illegible black mark. A lick of the finger and a quick wipe removed it entirely before I realised what it might have been.
