Happy to go along with this, it's a sensible trade-off.

 

Pretty much any system for guaranteeing buyer/seller ID can be thwarted with enough effort. This is a small amount of effort with (from the anecdotal experience of the air rifle forum) a reasonable success rate.

If BC decided to introduce full financial services Know Your Customer identification processes with passports and proof-of-life photgraphs then that would be more secure, but too inconvenient for most users.

Either way, I think a venn diagram of photoshop experts and online bass scammers will have very little overlap, and anything we can do to make it less convenient, the better. 

 

 

I imagine the frog guy on the headstock does the same thing too

Actually, that’s not a bad idea! I was once gifted a Lego ‘Dood’. I might add him to all of my sale posts too. (The likeness is uncanny 🤦🏻😂 )

A Post-it under the strings is a good idea. But I've noticed that some sellers have instead started adding watermarks, which doesn't help verify a listing as genuine, since anyone can watermark any photo.

But it is hard to unwatermark a photo that is watermarked

AI can remove watermarks with some success.

 

However, the point is that it's zero cost and zero effort to add a watermark to an image stolen off the internet, so it shouldn't give a potential buyer any more reassurance that the photos were yours in the first place.  Whereas photoshopping a Post-it note does require some time and ability, so a marketplace post with a Post-it does give the potential buyer some reassurance (not 100%, but some).

Again, it’s about making it harder. Would a scammer bother removing a watermark when they could just use a different picture? Probably not.

I'm not suggesting that a scammer will unwatermark an image.  Your post says you want to ensure listings can be verified as genuine and prevent people using cloned pictures from other sites - I'm saying watermarking doesn't do that, and in the worst case it can give false assurance.  How much more confident are you that I own this Fodera now that I've watermarked it, versus if it had no watermark in the first place?

Neither watermarking or using a post-it show you own the bass. It is about not having your images taken and used somewhere else. The trust needs to come from somewhere else

On a forum I'm involved with the simple approach of banning the pisting of ads until your first post had been approved by a mod hugely reduced scams.

 

Must scammers know nothing of the subject...

Likewise, on re-starting studies at the Open University I received a Playmobile lookalike folk musician (right hand side, playing 'recorder'). Henceforth any item I advertise without my mini-me in the photo will be FAKE!

That's a minefield, because we don't have the capacity to do due diligence that should be the buyer's responsibility. If we allowed an ad that turned out to be a scam, would that be our fault?
