Lozz196
Some songs imo are made by the solos, whereas again imo some solos do nothing for the song at all. As with anything all down to the listener, what one likes no doubt another will dislike, but it is in general a followed formula.

There were a lot of solos in those bands. Then came Hendrix and rock was on its way. Bands like Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin took rock to the next level. It's a genre that was (and still is) built around "hero" guitarists. Lemmy once said that Led Zeppelin defined the vocabulary of rock music.
Angel
I find songs a bit boring without a solo break. Doesn't have to be guitar, and yes, best if it fits the song of course! I listened to a fair degree of 80s 90s metal back in the day, and quite often the solo was a bit rubbish. You need a decent solo that adds to the song - for example, Brian May's playing on These are the days of our lives - short and sweet but so compliments the whole song. I'm not into loads of singing over everything, for me the best songs have plenty of 'musical' space. Yeah, I'm a prog fan!
RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE
A friend of mine pointed me in the direction of Volbeat . I listened to a whole album , possibky more . Something was missing ....Guitar Solo! There weren't any . So to me ..fail! Just seem a bit flat without it . On the whole , I don't really think too much about guitar solos . I love metal . All types ( I think) I love bands like mercyful Fate who have so many guitar sounds that all sound glorious . We can over analyse , but if you start doing that the fun goes . Lozz196
Which album was that @RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE, I’ve a few of the Volbeat albums and their lead guitarist (at the time) Rob Caggiano, formerly of Anthrax is a very good lead player. Might be worth a revisit, I’d recommend Seal The Deal & Let’s Boogie, great album.

Unfortunately I have no idea what it was I heard . It was many years ago . Pre 2016 if that's any help 🙂
