zonular Posted September 4, 2024 Posted September 4, 2024 (edited) Hey all Anyone out there playing the steel string version of the Kala solid body or black star carry on bass? If so what strings are you using? Can you cut strings down? (Without too much hassle) Edited September 5, 2024 by zonular 1 Quote
MJJS Posted September 6, 2024 Posted September 6, 2024 https://newtonestrings.com/shop/custom-bass-string-configurator/?v=79cba1185463 this should sort you out. Quote
zonular Posted September 6, 2024 Author Posted September 6, 2024 Contacted them today, seeing if they would do a set of flats, no joy. Even worse the Shopify shop blackstar has, doesn't ship to Ireland, so that's that plan nixed Quote
SamIAm Posted September 6, 2024 Posted September 6, 2024 @zonular, I play a different sub short scale (Ibanez GSRM25 ... 28.6 inch 5 string). I have landed on Newtone strings and they are good. I really wish they did flats or tapes but ... I've not found any other suppliers that do. I did try using longer scale cut down via various mechanisms but sadly only ended up wrecking them Sam x Quote
MJJS Posted September 6, 2024 Posted September 6, 2024 (edited) Ahh, no, they don’t do flats. Which is a shame as I’d like some short flats myself. There’s a theme starting here ….. Edited September 6, 2024 by MJJS Quote
zonular Posted September 6, 2024 Author Posted September 6, 2024 I just ukulelewales, they have a great video on attempting this, it didn't go well, I don't think I've the disposable income to be binning flatwounds Quote
meterman Posted September 6, 2024 Posted September 6, 2024 I cut down some 34" scale La Bellas to put on my 25" scale Precision copy. I found the La Bellas in the pocket of a gigbag I'd bought so they were free and I thought "what the heck" and cut them down anyway. They're still on the bass 10+ years later. I know now that cutting down flatwounds is a bad idea, as everyone says they can unravel, but I got away with it on this occasion. But if I was going to cut them down again I'd use £8 Harley Bentons instead of £50 La Bellas. I got the bass in a charity shop for less than a fiver anyway, so I didn't mind experimenting on it. Good luck with whatever you decide to do 👍 Quote
