NBD Jet P Bass (JPB-300-SG R)

It's here.  Very quick look and noodle at lunchtime suggests that it's very well put together with no obvious issues.  It sounds great so once again I may just leave it as stock per my JJB-300.   The neck is great and definitely different to their Jazz bass as I had thought that they might have done just one neck for both (like the Squier Silver Series basses).

Mine is just under 8lbs (3.6kgs) so super usable.

Congrats! I hadn't realised mine wasn't a jazz neck. I also assumed that they'd share the same neck ☺️

Cool.

I suppose mine feels narrow at the nut to me because I was so used to playing an old full width Fender "C" neck. I'm loving this neck.

So, two Jet P's down, both lightweights. Might be a thing...

Have fun!

I went to fit my chrome bridge cover last night but it didn't fit. The Jet bridge baseplate is a bit wider than a Fender. Foam under the strings it is then. No biggie.

Sounds great with the TI flats on. Will sound even better once they bed in. The red silks really make the tort work for me now too so I'm keeping it as is 👌

Took the Jet P to practice last night and had a solid 3hrs session with the band to see how the bass performed.  In short excellent.  The bass is still exactly as I received it barring the strap locks I have fitted.  Powerful little beastie that really cuts through, the neck is great to move around on.  The stock pickup and electrics work fine, I suspect it has ceramic magnets but clearly that's a guess on my part but it does have a pretty high output.  The light weight also makes it a doddle for the longer sessions/gigs.

I may try out a Steve Harris pickup that I have knocking about with a good quality loom, but in all honesty the standard set up works really well as in there is no sign of the on/off volume and tone knobs you can get with budget components and the pots have a nice quality feeling when you make adjustments.

All in all, a cracking P bass.

Saw the review on Johnny Dibble's Youtube -  and loved everything about this and wanted one until he and others mentioned feeling the frets - it's absolute deal breaker for me - i had an American Original Jazz that was amazing apart from the tall narrow frets which took my mind off playing  -  pity as this looks really nice for a back up - the SX P i have for sale has no pokey frets - still would like to try one at the price - the extra fret access at the heel makes them look like a Sire shape

No idea what he is talking about neither of my two Jet basses are afflicted in this way.  It struck me as an odd comment that none of the other reviews I've seen have mentioned.

I’ll take your word for it - and from your review sounds like a good back up

Just ordered the P  - hopefully good backup to my J and alternative to that on some songs  - it says 1.5 nut radius which if true was exactly what i was looking for a P with a J neck

If you want to come and try mine you'd be more than welcome (I'm in Chorley).  The nut on mine is 1.6 (41mm), but it's deffo a modern C shape and very comfy.

Mines coming tomorrow- got some extra La Bella LFTs for it- just wondering how much different it’ll be than the SX I already have - except for the roasted body and neck. Will get chance to rehearse it Tuesday

Just got mine - out of the box really good set up - i still think this is like an upgraded SX with the roasted neck (very nice) not sure if you own an SX that for the extra nearly £170 it's worth the extra, the SX has a glassy gloss but feels same shape,  they both feel very similar in weight and shape. The Jet has brass saddles too, but as a back up to my CIJ Jazz - it's very nice - easy to play - bit of neck dive sat down but lovely and light - all it really wins over the SX for me is the colour - the finish is great and the feel of the neck - like the SX i cant feel the frets, so maybe it's how Jonny Dibble plays it but nut is sharp (see his review here) nothing a bit of slight filing wont sort - i really should keep the SX and have maybe some tapes on it but I'm not one for having basses sat about not earning their keep - but in conclusion on the Jet hype train - will rehearse it tomorrow

Interested to hear how it went playing your Jet with band. I don't play out anymore (just at home jamming with my kids and writing for my own pleasure these days).

You have reminded me that I did actually have an SX P a few years ago - in lake placid blue. It was a good bass. Can't even remember why I sold it to be honest.

Looking forward to your thoughts..

Yes it's a keeper for a back up - very big output like the SX - had to turn the amp down-  so down the line probably going to throw in the Colbalt P bass pups from Fender - as have them on my jazz as they sound amazing, then will have similar output hopefully. The treble side of the stock pups is good - the bass side was good and meaty but they feel a bit unbalanced, tho only had a bit of time to dial it in - compared to silly expensive colbalts - but for stock on their own, they are fine.

Playing wise, really good experience , so light didnt feel it at all,  balanced on strap and that neck is great - impressive as was the SX, but this has a much better neck and bridge. Great for a back up or could be amazing with good pups, will be using this bass.

Just to update the group, I decided to upgrade the harness with some CTS pots etc. and added a Fender Custom Shop '59 p/up.  Now sounds approx. 44.7% more awesome; apologies I can't be any more accurate than that.

Great stuff. I'll be doing something similar myself as, during a good clear out of bass bits and bobs, I discovered a Lollar P pup that I'd completely forgotten about...Well, it would be rude not to!

Incredibly rude not to, I agree.  Interestingly I swapped the harness out first and ran it with the original fit pickup and there was a noticeable improvement.  The pickup swap just doubled down on that benefit.

It has got me thinking about doing something with electronics on the JJB-300 I have.

I must admit, even though I have no practical use for one at the moment, the idea of a JPB-300 with some TI flats has me mightily GASsed up! I love the sherwood green/tort combo.

I was going to say the same!

I have a great bitsa P I put together that doesn't get played, but that green....

I appear to have accidentally bought one of these.  Not sure how that happened.

🤷‍♂️

Joking aside, not crazy about the colour.  Hoping it looks better in the flesh, so to speak.

Well it arrived and I must say I like it more than I thought I would, nice metallic sparkle to it.  Lightweight too, but with a bit of neck dive.  Didn't measure it but nut width definitely wider than a Jazz.  _Really_ nice satin neck, frets ends well finished.

Now the bad parts: action was obscenely high.  When I lowered it by two full turn (and still too high) frets started buzzing here and there, despite there being more than enough neck relief and nut slots not cut particularly low. That rung alarm bells for me, so I've packed it up and started the return.

Shame.

Sorry to hear this; mine was pretty good straight out of the box.  I lowered the string height a tad with the bridge saddles, but didn't need to adjust the truss rod.

Mine sits fine on the strap but I agree there is a little neck dive on my lap.  I guess it's just the lightweight body and maybe heavy-ish tuners; probably solvable with an upgrade.  By way of comparison my JJB (at 4kgs) balances perfectly.
