SuperSeagull Posted September 7, 2024 Posted September 7, 2024 I understand Herbie Flowers has passed away aged 86. A genuine bass legend. 2 22 Quote
meterman Posted September 7, 2024 Posted September 7, 2024 Oh no, that's just awful, awful news. Rest In Peace, Herbie you legend 🙏 Quote
Mickeyboro Posted September 7, 2024 Posted September 7, 2024 A gentleman by all accounts. Sad to see our heroes check out… Quote
iamtheelvy Posted September 7, 2024 Posted September 7, 2024 Was hoping to catch him on the musical War of the Worlds tour next year. Such a shame. A major musical legacy left in his wake. Quote
Silvia Bluejay Posted September 8, 2024 Posted September 8, 2024 This is the blog about the South East Bass Bash 2016, where we had Herbie as a guest, and we even interviewed him for Bass Guitar Magazine. SEBB 2016 by Silvia Bluejay When I have a moment I'll try to find the published article and possibly also publish the audio of our interview. RIP Herbie, you are one of a kind. 💗 7 4 Quote
51m0n Posted September 8, 2024 Posted September 8, 2024 Really sad about this. Loved Herbie, super chap, looked after Pluxtheduck on a few Rockschools, and was always so generous with his time and knowledge. RIP 1 Quote
Chezz55 Posted September 8, 2024 Posted September 8, 2024 That’s sad news indeed. Saw Herbie Flowers live with ‘Sky’ when the first album was released. His bass guitar playing with ‘Sky’ was understated but essential to the coherence of the band. RIP Mr Flowers. 2 Quote
diskwave Posted September 8, 2024 Posted September 8, 2024 Legend and a really humble guy too. Came across him a few yrs ago at a local village fete on the back of an old wagon.. three of them playing some funky jazz in the pouring rain! Twas very good. Quote
stewblack Posted September 8, 2024 Posted September 8, 2024 Herbie played on many of my favourite tunes down the years. Oh, this is such sad news. 1 Quote

Sparky Mark Posted September 8, 2024 Posted September 8, 2024 (edited) I loved that man. Herbie's son Nick attended my secondary school for a while and Herbie started my bass playing passion by lending me a Fender bassman combo and bass guitar for a few months until I could afford my own. Meeting him 40 years later at the 2016 SE Basshchat get together was very emotional for me; as is the news of his passing. Edited September 8, 2024 by Sparky Mark 10 Quote

Here are a few of my photos from that day. Herbie was such a fabulous speaker - it really was an honour to have him with us that day. Apart from being very witty and charming, he was also so generous with his time... A few months afterwards, he invited me and Mrs Silverfoxnik to see him perform at The Dome in Brighton, one of his 'Herbie Flowers Jazz Breakfast'. During what was an amazing jazz show, he and the band did two stunning arrangements of David Bowie songs - 'Space Oddity' and 'Where Are We Now', which were absolutely sublime. RIP Herbie and thank you for all the amazing music.. 🙏 8 Quote
