I loved Sky as a teenager and last year bought the studio albums boxed CD set. Playing those tracks up and down the motorway has been a joy, and listening into them at home has been a real education in bass playing.

Have they inspired you to take up the tuba though?

I would love to know the real story behind his "59" Fender Jass Bass. It's a thing of legend. R.I.P. Herbie.

As would I. The 'fuzz circuit' surely wasn't factory original.

My guess is that it's a clipping diode passive fuzz circuit like some Gibson EB0s had in that period. Maybe Fender tried it out too? Total guesstimate!

My discovery of who Herbie was and appreciation of his bass chops and sound initially came from all that fabulous library music he made in the 60s and 70s, especially the stuff with Alan Hawkshaw.  Back in the 1990s, those songs actually became trendy dance music too.
