dirgefornovember
Hi all, I'm advertising a Warwick Corvette in the ads section with a 'loose nut'. What I mean by that is the top of the nut seems to just come off when changing the strings. I'm now second guessing myself and wondering whether this is, in fact, normal? Having taken a closer look, there's no way to keep it secure on there, it's seems to 'sit' on top, other than the screws to adjust the height. So the actual glued part of the nut is fine, it's just the adjustable top that comes off with no strings tension. Is that right?
Doctor J
Yes, that's right, it's a JAN 3. It's held on by the downward pressure of the strings. Edited September 8 by Doctor J
dirgefornovember
Case closed! 😅 Thanks @Doctor J, much appreciated.
LeftyJ
It's not a bug, it's a feature It's made that way to enable it to be adjustable in height.
lemmywinks
The older plastic JANs you'll encounter in the wild will also be loose because the retaining tabs broke within about a month of owning the bass!
Andyjr1515
Yes - it's a Just-a-nut. This is how they are/were made - and they work well.

Just-a-nuts have adjustable saddles, found on Thumbs and others I believe. As noted the above is a design feature.
Doctor J
That's the JAN 1. The JAN 2 was dreadful, it had thin tabs at either end which broke if you even thought about them from many miles away. The JAN 3 is in the OP's pics and is like the Alembic adjustable nut but without the feature which allows you to lock it to the baseplate.

I should be been more accurate to say that it is a Just-a-nut III. The Just-a-nut is the one with individually adjustable string heights and is much more expensive. The Warwick web site is here showing the brass versions of them both: https://shop.warwick.de/en/parts-for-instruments/warwick-spare-parts/just-a-nut/19702/warwick-parts-just-a-nut-4-string-brass

I had two basses with the JAN 2 on, I think my record was 2 string changes before the first tab snapped off. I preferred the brass one on my Fortress, given the price of Warwicks they should just use those as standard.

The JAN2 on my 2003 Streamer LX5 was broken when I bought it (used). It has a plastic JAN3 now which works a treat. My 2002 Streamer LX is an oddball with an original JAN (and no quick-access electronics cover) - I guess lefties were a little behind still.
Andyjr1515
Anyway, @dirgefornovember - yours is a Just-a-Nut III and looks fine. It is held in place by the strings

NickA
My dolphin has a jan1. It works. Also pointless, as if the nut height is correct you never need to change it. Eg the fixed brass nut on my MK2 Wal. Nadjustable nuts are something of a Warwick USP ... But I don't really know what they're for.

When I checked with Warwick whether I could convert my jan1 from EADG to BEAD I was told I could, and sent a replacement screw for the one string position that was not compatible with its new string diameter. That's the sort of thing they are for. David

I was lucky enough to pick up a couple of 5-string JAN Is cheap on Ebay a few years ago which fitted two of my Antoniotsais perfectly.
