fretmeister Posted September 9, 2024 Posted September 9, 2024 (edited) This is ace. Full run through of his di rig for bass guitars, DB, and synth, all with playing examples. Few anecdotes about when things have gone wrong too. PAGE 2 has a new rig video from him. Edited Thursday at 10:03 by fretmeister 22 5 Quote
jonnybass Posted September 9, 2024 Posted September 9, 2024 Great video, what a well thought out rig for his needs. Jonny 1 Quote
diskwave Posted September 9, 2024 Posted September 9, 2024 I saw it too and left a nice comment. Impressive indeed. 1 Quote
fretmeister Posted September 9, 2024 Author Posted September 9, 2024 I'm loving the tone he's getting with the Overwater and the EBS acoustic preamp. I've never had an EBS anything - but now I'm thinking about it! Damn this GAS! 1 Quote
Linus27 Posted September 9, 2024 Posted September 9, 2024 What a brilliant video and the Overwater and Lakland both sound amazing. I have Bart's in my Jazz and they are incredible, I wouldn't run any other pickups. 1 Quote
fretmeister Posted September 9, 2024 Author Posted September 9, 2024 The only Barts I've had have been the cheap ones in an Ibanez. They are so bad I think they've probably damaged the brand a little. 1 Quote
chris_b Posted September 9, 2024 Posted September 9, 2024 Great video, fantastic player and musician. I've played that bass and it is amazing in every respect, except for the weight, 11lbs if I remember correctly! I would love to own many Overwaters, but they are usually on the heavy side and I can't deal with the weight!! 2 Quote

Mine are the Original Single Coil J-Bass 9S and they are phenomenal. 1 Quote
fretmeister Posted September 9, 2024 Author Posted September 9, 2024 I've been thinking about changing the EMGs in my Sandberg, just because of wanting-a-change reasons and I'll have to have a look at some Barts now. Quote

No idea of the actual weight but feels like standard fender. Quote

madshadows Posted September 10, 2024 Posted September 10, 2024 The video was terrific, a lot of great playing and information John 😎 1 Quote
Franticsmurf Posted September 10, 2024 Posted September 10, 2024 Thanks for sharing. That Lakland hollowbody is rather nice. A hollowbody is the only style of bass I don't have. I can feel the first rumblings of GAS! 2 Quote
kiat Posted September 10, 2024 Posted September 10, 2024 The most entertaining video on bass I've seen - thanks for sharing it! Was so curious about bass in stage shows. I had a great bass teacher for a year or two (Mike Nichols in Guildford) who like Ian King, played in West End orchestra pits and also, I see, Overwater basses. Also they've a John East preamp connection. Mike advised me when thinking about buying a used Lakland JO5 to get a John East preamp fitted, which I managed to do this year (a J-Tone) that I'm really pleased with. 1 Quote
Graham56 Posted September 10, 2024 Posted September 10, 2024 Yeah, but he never said what plectrum he uses... 😁 Seriously though, an excellent video. He has that completely relaxed look at the fretting hand that to me shows a top player, rather than that slightly panicky sweaty look I have... 1 1 Quote

It’s not often you get access to a teacher of his level and experience. One of my favourites I experienced at ACM for sure. 2 Quote
richh Posted September 11, 2024 Posted September 11, 2024 Thanks, that is an interesting video, very impressive player! I'm curious as to how good the Boss tuners are - he seems to be saying that he can check his double bass intonation while playing to check he is spot on? If so, that is really impressive! I don't think he meant he was just checking his open strings are in tune. If the Boss tuners are that accurate, and presumably able to track the notes quickly, they might be handy for people learning fretless, EUB or double bass to check and correct intonation? Or, did I completely misunderstand how he is using this with his DB? 1 Quote
mike f Posted September 11, 2024 Posted September 11, 2024 I have now lost count of how many times I’ve watched him playing Yorktown. Great sound and great playing. Quote

Cheers I’ve done a crude weigh on bathroom scales and I think it is roughly 4.5kg which is admittedly not that light for a 4 string bass, but is not too heavy for me either. Quote

That's just too heavy for me (old guy with back issues), but thanks for doing that. Maybe the woods being on the heavy side, and probably more resonant with it, is what gets their great sound. 1 Quote
KingPrawn Posted October 2, 2024 Posted October 2, 2024 wonderful. Thanks for posting. A great incite into the world of a pro pit player 1 Quote
velvetkevorkian Posted October 2, 2024 Posted October 2, 2024 Super cool, thanks for posting. That OW does sounds incredible (although you get the feeling he could probably play some rubber bands nailed to a 2x4 and still sound great) 1 1 Quote
