BassAgent
I've been keeping a list on Google Drive for about 15 years now where I keep track of all basses I've owned so far. Name, year and serial number. Last week, I created a folder with pics of all those basses. I miss just one, a fretless Yamaha I had when I was 12. If anyone wants a peek, let me know🙃 Do you people do the same? How do you keep track of everything you've owned?
Maude
I find not selling anything helps to keep track of what I've owned. Definitely doesn't help the bank balance though. 😉 5 1
Woodinblack
Not sure why you would want to keep a track of everything you owned! My stuff is all insured though, so I could probably search emails for serials for things I had, and I have a lot of photos of everything, but once I no longer have something I am no longer interested in it, so I wouldn't put any effort into it
Doctor J
I thought we had a thread which recorded all that before? Andy won.

I've got a list of current stuff with serial no.s, when I last restrung them, etc. but once it's sold it's deleted. Gone.

Gone. Every time I restring a bass I think 'Oh I should make a note of when I did that and what with' - same with batteries. And I never do! Need to get better at that stuff. ok, starting next time I restring or rebattery something, I will make a note!
cetera
I have a list of my whole collection with serial numbers/descriptions etc. I also have a list of all the gear I've sold/traded but just their titles, no serial #'s etc...

Woodinblack
There we go - a positive progress. I have made a spreadsheet and added two basses currently. Mainly because one, the battery has just died, so I know when that is going to be replaced, and the other one I bought last week! Hmm.. the downside of this is that putting it in a spreadsheet makes you admit how many you have!
neepheid
I've got a simple text file I keep track with. It's not 100% chronological (because I only had the bright idea to do it long after I started), but it has all the basses which have ever darkened the doors of Neepheid Towers. The only additional details I record are whether it was new or used, and whether or not I tried it before I bought it.
tauzero
At the moment, a text file on my phone, but I think I should do it properly.
NancyJohnson
I've got a list of what I own on a spreadsheet. Serial numbers/anticipated values etc. Said spreadsheet also includes contact details for @cetera.
Stub Mandrel
I have a spreadsheet, mainly because if I count them in my head I get different numbers...

Similar here in spreadsheet format. Edit: I've also catalogued a lot of the pedals and basses I've owned on Instagram too. Lozz196
Similarly I keep a spreadsheet of what I own but don’t include what I’ve moved on.
meterman
Me and a mate started a list each one night down the pub. I got as far as 114-ish guitars and basses and he had a much more conservative 80-something. But this was over a 40 year period and neither of us ever kept receipts, photos, logbooks, etc. At the moment I've got two basses and 14 guitars and he's got one bass and 5 guitars. Stuff just ebbs and flows. Nothing really settles.
basshead56
I've kept a running list (in chronological order) for all the basses and amps i've owned. I just strikethrough whatever has been moved on. Just has the model, year and colour on it. Fun fact - my recently acquired Victor Bailey Jazz marks bass number 50 - a good place to stop, right? Funnily enough though, last weekend, I decided to record a bit more detail (for insurance etc) so I photographed everything (including serial numbers, any unique wear or marks and case)) and made a spreadsheet with all the details. I plan to also record when each bass has had a setup or new strings on the sheet. Edited September 10 by basshead56

Steve Browning
I'm the same. I also have a tab on the spreadsheet that records when I restring them and with which strings.
Cat Burrito
I've never done this but it turned out that my ex-wife did for me! 🙈 I think doing so would cure a lot of GAS.
JoeEvans
I would have to rephrase the question - why would you keep track of everything you've owned?

Because it's fun to remember/reminisce. Because if you think I'm going through the mental gymnastics that it took to create the list in the first place every time I want to remember a particular bass from my past, you've got another thing coming. Also, if it's getting to the point where I am considering fitting a revolving door to my house, I'll need to show justification.
Woodinblack
11 minutes ago, JoeEvans said: I would have to rephrase the question - why would you keep track of everything you've owned? As someone who didn't at the start of the thread and now keeps track of some things, it occured to me that having something where I can make a note of when I changed the strings or the battery on a bass is actually valuable, because it answered a problem I had thinking when I had last changed a battery in a bass or which strings I liked - the strings on the bongo sound better than the strings on the ibanez - is that because of the instruments themselves, or is it that one of them is NYXL and one of them is the coated markbass, I think it is but I can't remember which one had which strings. One of the basses also had GHS Boomers on them which I was given, which one was that, and how do they stack up? Its not everything, the other stuff like keyboards I don't need to keep track of, I can see them, and they are insured
