Well, that's the knobs sorted.  As Baga Chipz would say, "MUCH BETTAH!"

Could you post a link to the set you ordered please?  I've got a Z7 in Antique White arriving today so it looks like I'll be ordering a set of new knobs based on everyone's feedback.

That "burgundy" finish looks really nice.  It's not really burgundy though, is it? :)

That’s certainly a looker. The new headstock design is a massive improvement over the old Sires- I wonder if it’ll be introduced on their other basses. I reckon their sales will increase if they do, that old headstock design is proper fugly! Congrats

First of all, I would say make up your own mind about it before doing anything - everything you've read about the knobs here is personal opinion.  They might not bother you, and there would be nothing wrong with that.

But to answer your question:

https://www.bassdirect.co.uk/product/east-knob/

They only have chrome in stock and double unfortunately, they only have 1 stack knob left in stock.  Sorry if that was me taking the second and third last ones.  I guess you could ask when they'll have more.  Other knobs are available - most of them are a standard size.  Good luck!

I think "burgundy mist" would ordinarily be the full colour name, but after they got their knuckles rapped for the initial headstock design they're probably feared of being sued by Fender or whoever used that term first.  Or something got lost in translation, I dunno.  But yes, I wouldn't drink burgundy that colour, it's gone off, mate! ;)

Well, I still haven't had a chance to fully play it (thanks rotator cuff🙄) but I'm thoroughly impressed with it.  Build quality is amazing and it sounds great although, yes, the knobs are an issue.  Initially I thought the shafts on the blend and treble pots were bent, but it's just the crappy knobs that won't seat flat on the shafts - reminds me of a playground witch's hat as I turn them.  They're aluminium, but have a plastic bush inside, and I think that's the issue.  Anyway, easily sorted and for the price of the bass it's no great hardship to spend a few more quid, and it's only aesthetic - they function perfectly well.

I have made a correction to my initial statement, specifically regarding the bass control on the preamp.  Having been assured by another poster that it should provide massive gobs of bass when called upon I opened my Z7 up again to take another look.  Turns out that when I went in there the first time, I might have snagged the wires to the bass pot a little.  They are not soldered on, they use connector blocks which are pushed onto the terminals of the pots.  I did notice that connector to the bass pot was at a bit of a jaunty angle.  So I pushed it all the way on, then tested it et voilà - working bass control.  Phew, I really couldn't be arsed with returning it, especially since everything else is pretty damn great.  Now whether I caused this issue when I was doing the photos of the guts, or if it had been that way the whole time, I couldn't say, eh, it's sorted now.

So, to confirm, the bass control does a lot.  I used it last night to good effect - was playing on a small stage which despite not being very high was being a bit boomy.  Simply dialled back the bass on the preamp a little - problem solved!

I quite like the knobs, myself :D

The feel of the potentiometers could be better, and a couple of the knobs needed tightening, but the knobs themselves are fine I think. I like that they're not the same as in every other bass too.

That's more like it. If anything I find the bass control VERY powerful. Turning up a tiny bit boosts a lot!

The same paint was "Burgundy Mist" when applied to an Oldsmobile, "Royal Amethyst" on a Pontiac, or "Lido Lavender" on a Buick 😆
It was 1959... I'm pretty sure everything was black and white until shortly before then, so they were only just getting the hang of these new-fangled "colours"

Much better! I’d like to change the knobs on mine too, do you have a link to the set of chrome ones you got?

I've been having a look at the 5 string version of this.

It says the nut width is 45"

Does anyone know what the string spacing is ?

My Z7-5 is 17.5mm spacing at the bridge, and the nut is indeed 45mm.

The neck feels a bit slimmer than my Ray35, and the rolled edges are so smooth :) I love it.

Thanks all.

It will still feel like 45" compared to my Ibanez's 38mm

:on_the_quiet:

Still thinking about it.

The last 5 I had was a Ibanez SR1305 premium, which I now regret selling, but had to be done at the time.

I think the bridge spacing was 16 - 16.5mm

You can get clones of the East knobs on AliExpress, sometimes Guyker branded. They're just as good (I have both) and actually in stock when you need to buy them.

Can you not also get them from John (East) directly?  I think you used to be able to order them straight from his website.  Just checked - yes, you still can.

Yeah you can when he has them in stock, which isn't often.

I was after some for my Ibanez a few years back, put my email down for a stock notification but never heard anything so just bought the Guyker ones instead. Just had a look now and pretty much everything is out of stock.

Almost ready to pull the trigger.......I think.

@neepheid has your see through scratchplate arrived yet ?

How much was it ? (PM if you don't want to put it up here)

Brian received the pickguard for copying on Thursday and I paid yesterday so hopefully it'll be next week some time.

Not trying to be secretive but it might be cheaper now that Brian will have a template for the Z7 - I'd enquire directly.

Thanks

How does it look sans plate ?

Usual screwless rugby ball shadow ?

I left it out on the stand with the guard off where I would see it often to make sure I knew what I wanted.

I like the look of it without the guard, but I despise pointless screws in the body, and I hate pointless holes worse.  I CBA filling the holes, so the clear guard is the compromise.
