The very definition of "on-stage brawl"

The band says...

"Due to a continuing pattern of behavior and the mental health difficulties of our singer Perry Farrell, we have come to the conclusion that we have no choice but to discontinue the current US tour.

"Our concern for his personal health and safety as well as our own has left us no alternative. We hope that he will find the help he needs.

"We deeply regret that we are not able to come through for all our fans who have already bought tickets. We can see no solution that would either ensure a safe environment on stage or reliably allow us to deliver a great performance on a nightly basis.

"Our hearts are broken. Dave, Eric and Stephen".

Sad for them, I’ve got a lot of time for them, less for their ego mess of a singist

Suspect that this will cost them all a lot of cash, not just the cancellations and refunds of ticket fees (dread to think what the costs of stadium hire are these days, but have no doubt we’re looking at tens of millions over the tour, and I’m assuming the insurers will refuse to pay given the circumstances). Solicitors are going to be brought in by one or more of them to try and recoup losses from the others and that’s going to ramp the whole thing up even more. All because a bloke can’t hold his drink/manage his emotions on stage 😕

To be honest, that was my first thought - it's gonna cost them a lot of money! Things must be bad if they can't even manage to manage the situation to finish the tour (and thereby manage to avoid bankruptcy)...!

For those that can't see the full article above …

Perry Farrell apologized to his bandmates, fans, and family after an onstage altercation with Dave Navarro prompted Jane’s Addiction to cancel the rest of their reunion tour.

“This weekend has been incredibly difficult and after having the time and space to reflect, it is only right that I apologize to my bandmates, especially Dave Navarro, fans, family and friends for my actions during Friday’s show,” Farrell said in a statement.

“Unfortunately, my breaking point resulted in inexcusable behavior, and I take full accountability for how I chose to handle the situation,” he added.

Farrell’s statement came a couple of hours after Jane’s Addiction announced the cancellation of the rest of the tour. The band’s official note was accompanied by a separate statement from Navarro, drummer Stephen Perkins, and bassist Eric Avery, who said the tour was canceled due to a “continuing pattern of behavior and the mental health difficulties of our singer Perry Farrell.”

The three continued: “Our concern for his personal health and safety as well as our own has left us no alternative. We hope that he will find the help he needs… We can see no solution that would either ensure a safe environment on stage or reliably allow us to deliver a great performance on a nightly basis.”

The core lineup of Jane’s Addiction kicked off their first tour together in 14 years last month. According to reports, tensions had been simmering with Farrell’s long-winded bantering with the crowd appearing to frustrate Navarro. Everything finally boiled over last Friday in Boston, when Farrell yelled at Navarro during “Mountain Song,” and the pair continued to bicker through “Three Days.”

Then, during “Ocean Size,” Farrell grew agitated, walked up to Navarro, and rammed his shoulder into the guitarist’s back. Farrell continued to yell at Navarro and ultimately punched the guitarist on his shoulder. Farrell was held back by several crew members as he tried to lunge at Navarro again. Eventually, he was taken off stage and Navarro followed. The show ended early after about 11 songs.

I wonder if the statement is the start of a process where Farrell goes into therapy / rehab or whatever in an attempt to get the insurance to pay out on medical grounds? It is very likely to end up in the courts.

I remember that Gary Moore nearly went bankrupt when he had to cancel a tour when he injured his hand and the insurance didn't pay up (the reason why he had to sell the famous 'Greeny' Les Paul and a load of his other vintage guitars).

The type of insurer who underwrites a rock tour would be unlikely to fall for that, they’d have seen this potential and covered themselves very well. The only way out for the band would have been a swift show of solidarity following Friday but that ship sailed. Only people who get rich now are the lawyers 😕

I'm sure that is the most likely outcome. The Gary Moore example shows that the insurers cover themselves even when you would think that the artist has a pretty good case. You have to wonder what the insurance contract for the Oasis reunion is like...! 🙂

I suppose that it's no great surprise, given that the JA situation has been highly dysfunctional since the early days. Ferrell engineered events so that he had the other members over a barrel and they had to agree that he got the vast majority of the money from their initial success. I'm sure that he won't be overly happy that the other members all went on to have pretty successful careers after they broke up, while his solo ventures didn't exactly set the world on fire.

The openers for the tour are a young UK band and this is their third tour cancellation this year, by my count. Not good for the finances and one of the things that finally did my last lot in (the cost of losing US/EU tours due to 2020 rather than a crazy singer).

Is there no dep singer available..? How hard can it be with an autocue..? o.O

Without second-guessing any legal issues about who owns the bandname, Perry is still kind of the draw for Janes. Was still the draw at least, until recently.

They've had a rotating bass seat, couple of drummers, and Navarro sat out the last few runs while he was ill, but Perry has been the driving personality as well as having a distinctive voice and stage presence. Also, although I said I wasn't going to second guess, considering his past clutching of the royalty purse strings he probably owns the name too. 🙄

I wouldn’t call it a revolving door. For the vast majority of their time together, it’s been Avery or Chaney. And Stephen Perkins has been their only drummer.

There’s been five bass players who’ve performed live with Jane’s - in addition to Avery and Chaney, there was Duff McKagan (who was in the band for six whole months!), Martyn LeNoble (from Porno For Pyros) who finished off the 2010 NIN/JA tour when Avery quit, and Flea (during the 1997 “relapse” tour).

Their last album (The Great Escape Artist, 2011) featured Chaney and Dave Sitek on bass. Supposedly Duff wrote some bass parts for it, but never recorded them. Would have been interesting to hear that.

At the level of money we’re talking, and given the suggestion of Farrell’s ownership/control above, this reads as almost a case of corporate irresponsibility. Having said that I read there were only 12 dates with a load of dates already played, to go so tour receipts to date might offset cancellation costs. I hope so

Perry's voice went a long time ago. Band sound solid as ever but jeez, time to get a new vocalist or start a different project.

His pitch has always been pretty bad live. There's some video out there of him in Porno For Pyros doing the Woodstock '94 festival and I'm not sure he got a single note in key.

When they came back for the 2010 NIN/JA tour with Nine Inch Nails, he sounded great. He'd started using IEMs and was actually singing mostly in key. He's deteriorated significantly since then though. Although what I saw of the show they did in London a couple of months back wasn't too bad. By Perry standards, anyway.

Dave, Chaney and Perkins had a side project for a while called The Panic Channel back in 2006. They did one album that wasn't bad, but it was a lot more "conventional" alt-rock than what everyone was used to hearing from Jane's. It was OK, just not very interesting.

This album was pretty decent too:

It’s one of my all-time favourite records. It evokes a mood, and paints a far more realistic picture of Los Angeles than most other bands do - no glamour, no hyperbole, just love for a place where these people grew up. There’s some lovely bass on there, and Navarro is utterly sublime on some of the tunes - the solo on “Big Sur” is beautiful, and probably the second best thing he’s ever recorded (the first being the solo in Three Days, which was apparently all one take). :D
