Neck Profile Modification? Recommendations?

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I have a bass that I like but I think I'd like it more if the neck was a bit thinner front to back. Does anyone have experience of getting a neck re-profiled (if that's even the right term), and if so, who did it and were you happy with the end result?

Cheers 🍻

I've done it and I was happy with the result.  There are many ways of doing it but the safest way is to just use sand paper.  Start off with something like 60 grit and when you get it to where you want it, start using finer grades to make it really smooth.  Finish the neck in your choice of finish.  Oil, varnish or leave it as it is.

Be aware that any significant re-shaping of the neck may well alter the sound of the bass.

I think that of the mods to the neck of my second Warwick Thumb that I got Joe the now retired luthier to do, the reprofiling had significantly less effect on the sound than the defret.

I've actually acclimatised to the chunkier neck and am loving the sound, so I might just leave it as-is.

Thanks all, as you were.
