TBH St Vincent’s music isn’t really my thing, but I can see why others like her stuff and she good taste in bass players. EB creating a signature guitar for her is smart marketing, as is any company creating a signature instrument for someone popular/contemporary, rather than someone from the old guard.

I agree, but Fender haven't done this to sell the bass in question to players like Blu, they've done it to sustain their relevance with the demographic that aspire to be Blu. They don't care whether the bass sells by the 10s or by the thousands, but the fact that people are talking about Fender in the present tense, that some people new to Fender believe they are relevant, still others even that Fender understand them, that's where the mojo is for Fender 👍

It’s the bridge pickup solo’d. Probably doesn’t sound awesome on a mobile device, but it had some nice bite on my studio monitors.

I had a double J-PUP at the bridge on a bass a few years back and never liked it, didn't have a lot of life, bit too close to the bridge I expect?

My first bass was a Marlin Sidewinder! 80’s P/HB config, which, I believe pre-dated the Fender Deluxe that had the same. I read a rumour that the Marlin inspired the Jazz Bass Special too, but I’ve not looked in to it. Though, I think with the right HB, it certainly has a fatter tone than a standard single coil. There’s a few basses I have reviewed with downright weedy bridge pickups. 
I don’t tend to solo the bridge pickup in all honesty. Nice to have something useable if I need to.

We've got a massive pile of new gear to video review, including lining up this very bass for a full in-depth deep dive! I've recently covered the Fender Player Plus Jazz bass that is, I guess, the same family as the Blu DeTiger Signature Bass, and I really liked the one Fender sent me.

Amen to that. We're talking about pop music here. It's always been about theatre, fashion and making waves to get noticed. If people don't like that (as is their right), they can move on and find something more to their tastes.

 

As an old git (70) myself, I find it tiresome when other old gits blather on about "role models". Pop music was never about "setting a good example" ("Remember kids. Say no to recreational pharmaceuticals", etc, blah, blah) and similar tripe. It's about rebellion and stirring things up a bit. I loved the Pistols back in the day and guess what? People were spouting the same tired nonsense about them at the time. Ditto the Stones, Elvis et al going further back.

 

Companies such as Fender need to sell instruments. They have bills to pay, staff to keep employed, etc. If they want to pick someone who is easy on the eye and a competent enough player (granted, she's no Marcus Miller, but she can get round the instrument) to promote their wares, that's fair enough. Personally, I couldn't care less about her or her music, but I'm not part of the target audience. I'm not going to buy any more Fenders - I'm happy with the couple I have - and the company isn't going to stay in business due to me.

 

It seems a lot of the moaning is due to the fact that some struggle to accept that they are getting old and that what they want or like is no longer the focus of attention. Well tough. It's the way things are and we have no choice other than to get used to it.

TBH, totally agree.  If someone equates mini skirt with prostitute or see through top with call girl it says more about them than the person wearing it. I've not seen footage of Blu in anything other than clothes a 20 something might want to go out in.  Even if she did anyone can wear what they like to promote their image.
