Ibanez ATK 9v battery drain issue

Hi all,   

 

I am currently experiencing a very annoying problem with my Ibanez ATK805.   

 

It was previously working perfectly fine, the 9v battery would last for months. I always carry a spare battery in my gig bag, but don't recall having to ever actually change it, ever.   

 

The input jack had a slight loose connection in it - the signal would cut out if the 1/4" cable was pushed in a particular angle. So, I took it to my local guitar repair tech to replace the jack.   

 

Now, the jack problem is fixed but the 9v battery drains extremely fast. But it seems to be random. At one time a brand new battery will last a couple weeks, and then I'd take it out of my gig bag and it would be dying. Though another time, I'd put in a brand new battery and it would be completely dead two days later...   

 

It's been back to the guitar tech twice now to try and diagnose the problem, but he can't replicate the issue and doesn't know what's wrong with it.   

 

So, I thought I'd post on here to see if anyone has any suggestions!

It sounds like the ring and sleeve could be the wrong way round so the pre-amp is permanently connected.

Depending on how healthy the battery is, even new ones vary, the fairly low current draw of the pre-amp could keep it working for a couple of weeks. Or die in a couple of days.

Yes, this is that it isn't disconnecting. I once bought a barrel jack which had a shield and two terminals that I assumed were the right and tip, but weren't they were connected to the ring and sleeve, so there were two terminals to the same place, which would cause your battery to die very quickly as it was on all the time.

You may have just solved my rsimilar rapid battery drain issue.  Bass has decided to consume batteries after I replaced the barrel jack.  I should have checked the connections with a multimeter before soldering up.  Stupidity of the first order on my part given my background.

Take all the gubbins out and go passive, maybe with a Pup Swap...

Not that stupid - I mean, if you have a barrel connection and two terminals of different sizes, it should be obvious that they are the ring and tip. So it is a surprise when they aren't!

IME unless you can actually see which terminal is connected to which contact on a jack socket, it is always best practice to use a multimeter to check.

ATK PUs and pres are great, I've never seen any point in changing them.
