BIG Changes At eBay

Recommended Posts

Hi Jack
To improve the selling experience on eBay, from today (1 October 2024) it is now free to sell for our private sellers in the UK. We are also introducing a number of updates to make selling on eBay easier and safer than ever.

Free selling

Earlier in the year, we removed transaction fees for pre-loved clothing. As of 1 October 2024, we are extending this across categories, with the exception of motors. Here’s what this means for you:

• Transaction fees were paid when your item sells. We are removing these fees, meaning selling is now free. This applies for both new and existing listings.

• Listing fees are paid when you list an item. You will receive 300 free listings a month.

• Optional add-on features, such as international selling and promoting your listing, will be available for an additional cost.

If you'd told me that was coming, you bar stewards, I might have postponed my recent big kit sell-off by a couple of months. 😂😂😂

Maybe there will be more realistic prices for used gear now that sellers don't have to add-on something to cover their eBay selling fees? That's if anyone actually ever did that 🤔

Indeed. I think Ebay did some analysis and had a spreadsheet session and came to the conclusion they were losing money compare to the pre-fee days.

I think eBay (like other selling platforms) have noticed the drop off since HMRC have been looking more closely at sellers?

I think the HMRC stuff was a threat rather than a reality. They simply don’t have the staff to proactively search out traders

It's more likely that eBay are feeling the pain of platforms like Vinted, which pretty much everyone I know is now using for clothes. Re music gear, I used to look at eBay all the time on the off chance of seeing a bargain or rare instrument or piece of studio equipment, but those days are long gone. Ebay seems to be mostly new (or fake) items now, but if I want to buy new eBay is the last place I'd look, you usually get better service and lower prices going straight to the supplier/manufacturer. Ebay is still massive of course, and I doubt is in any sort of trouble, but they're probably getting more massive at a slower rate then their Execs planned for, so I guess they're trying everything

So, I sold on ebay last week for the first time in years. The sale was less than £100. No listing fee and, oddly, no final value fee. What I didn't like, though, is that I don't get paid until the package is marked as 'delivered', and even then I was told payment could take two days. Bizarre.

EDIT: Perhaps I read that wrong. The item is out for delivery in the buyers locality and the payout is now available.

I haven't sold anything on ebay for some years now but occasionally buy.

They started upping their T&Cs, enforcing their own finance option, restricting allowed items, and finding nothing wrong with obviously counterfeit items.

TBH I couldn't be doing with the hassle selling, and buying ain't what it used to be.

It's offputting when a company takes it upon itself to start dictating to its customer base.

There’s a 24 hour turnaround on payments. One assumes this is because it’s easier to do this way.

I’ve sold £900 worth of junk all with no fees. I can’t complain.

I read that but wasn’t sure if the final value fee only applies to those outside the uk due to how it’s laid out as there is no specific heading for final value fees

The second paragraph you come to, in a big orange box, says

Free selling for UK-based private sellers
It's now free for UK-based private sellers to sell on eBay (excluding motors: Cars, Motorcycles & Vehicles listings). You won't pay final value fees or regulatory operating fees when your items sell.

So, if you're a UK-based private seller, you don't pay final value fees, and if you don't sell more than 300 items a month and don't use reserve prices then the listings will be free too.
