They've shifted the selling bit to the buyer.

eBay already had buyer protection, so they've just added a buyer's tax.

They're really doing their best to help people decide to look elsewhere.

Ebay has been obsolete to me for a long time.

I sell quite a bit on eBay and use Evri for tracking, which eBay tracking does not support.  This means that I will have to wait 14 days after an item is sold to be paid for it, making me seriously consider why I would use eBay at all.

A funny thing happened on my way to Ebay...

I just bid on and won something on Ebay, which I'm sure was priced at £63.15 so the seller had priced it at £60 (£60 + 75p + (£60 * .04). I won it via a sniper app so I didn't see what it was priced at when I won it, but I was billed for and paid £60. Other items on my watch list have also mysteriously dropped by what appears to be the amount of the buyer protection fee. Have Ebay given up on it? Haven't had any email about it but maybe they were losing business due to it.

Edit: Correction, it was priced at £63.12, and on the auction itself it says "incl. £3.12 for Buyer Protection", but I wasn't charged the £3.12.

sold a thing
payed the postage from the total amount from the buyer
payed the protection racket fee from the total amount from the buyer which ebay add to your carefully thought out and reasonable pitch, elevating the cost of the item. You can revalue your item to absorb the ebay fee i guess, but "taking a hit" and "paying a fee" are pretty close imho.

I re-started with the bay after a long stoppage, its reach is great, but its not the same place, FN Market Place is ok apart from no shows, but at least the scammers are direct and in your face. Gumtree, Friday Ad, post card in the shop window... everyone wants a slice of your sale.

I think a general lack of trust in ebay is the issue here. Like the insurance companies hiking the cost of fraud and shit drivers onto every one else, I am sure FleaBay are taking a fiscal hit with all the shenanigans on their platform and so, "Buyer Protection" is born. charge upfront on all transactions for any that go south.. its a spread bet, and remember the house ALWAYS wins.

Free to list. Not truly free to sell, some one has to pay.

Ebay have been very underhanded here, they said funds would be released 2 days after the item has been delivered.

but... they have removed the button that says "item received" so unless you use their posting and tracking service there is no way the person can say they have received their item, even when they leave feedback two days after they have bought it cus you sent an item next day delivery  and sent it on the day it was paid for, you still have to wait OVER two weeks for your cash.

so...

ebay have a float of everyons cash for two weeks rolling, thats a sh!t load of cash that does not belong to them collecting interest FOREVERRRRRRRR.

and here is the new one.... get ready....

"Add your tax information to your account to get compliant with UK digital sales reporting legislation, and to avoid upcoming restrictions."

tax is also accountable for second hand goods being sold, so be careful selling your wal on ebay for £10K !

you might want to look into that regarding the boundaries of what is taxable and what is not !

I thought the tax thing was not applicable for "private" sales? [I have been wrong before]

"In general, selling personal items is not taxed if they’re below £6,000 and you’re not selling as part of a business."

sort of... to a point.

here is what you get if you go over £1740

--------------------------------------------------

We're reaching out to remind you of the UK digital sales reporting law. This law requires marketplaces like eBay to collect and report seller information if you meet one of these thresholds: 30 or more sales, or sales exceeding £1740 in a calendar year.

You can add your National Insurance number from account settings.

As a reminder, your tax obligations haven't changed. According to HMRC, if you’re selling a few unwanted personal items, like those stored in a loft or garage, it's unlikely that you'll need to pay tax.
If you're unclear about whether you need to report income, this tool from HMRC is a helpful guide. For more context on the information required to comply with this legislation, and how we protect your personal data, see our dedicated Seller Centre page.

hope that helps,

it was only a matter of time !

the next phase

---------------------------------------------

We’re continuing our mission to provide you with a great selling experience on eBay, which is why we made it free to sell. Now, we’re improving delivery so it’s faster, easier, and more secure for you to send your items.

Starting from 15 April, Simple Delivery will be the only delivery method available for private sellers when listing most items. There’ll be a few exceptions, such as low-priced, bulky items, and local pick-up, which aren’t eligible for Simple Delivery.

What is Simple Delivery?

Simple Delivery is our all-in-one delivery solution, designed to cut out all of the effort and save you money. It’s also the fastest way to get paid on eBay. Plus, buyers will benefit from savings and enjoy the peace of mind that tracking offers. Here’s how it works:

1.

When listing, we’ll recommend the size and weight of your item. Just confirm and we’ll do the rest.

2.

Once your item sells, you’ll receive both a printer-less QR code and a prepaid printable label, so you can choose what’s easiest.

3.

Drop off your item at the nearest carrier location, or schedule a home collection and you’re done!

You’ll still be able to choose the carriers by going to Postage Preferences in your account settings. We recommend enabling all carriers for the most competitive postage rates.

Benefits of Simple Delivery

Simple Delivery offers a faster and easier experience:

Fastest way to get payments: Get your funds 2 days after delivery confirmation when using our prepaid labels.

Save 20% off postage costs*: Get competitive rates to offer standard and express delivery with Royal Mail and Evri.

Full protection: Enjoy peace of mind with eBay's full coverage for items lost or damaged in transit, where we handle claims with buyers so you don’t have to.

Free postage option: Choose if you want your buyer to pay for the label, or offer free postage and cover the cost.

Prepaid and tracked labels: Labels come with automatic tracking so buyers always know where their items are.

Flexible labels: Use a QR code for quick printing at drop-off locations, or easily print your own label at home.

Positive feedback: From late April, you’ll automatically receive positive feedback for tracked transactions delivered on time, where no feedback has been left within 7 days and no issues are reported, so you get the recognition you deserve. Learn more about this change.

Simple Delivery will apply to new eligible listings by private sellers in the UK, and from 7 April to any existing listings that are eligible. If you selected buyer-paid postage, this will stay the same when your listings are updated. If you’re covering the costs, they’ll be deducted from your sales. Click the button below to see what’s eligible.
