Dave Peacock is so underrated.

The type of timing, phrasing, and feel for a song you can only gave through years of gigging, rehearsing when you’re nit gigging, and practicing when you’re not doing either of the other two. Glorious player 👍

Was so glad to have seen Chas ‘n’ Dave live (my nephew’s stag weekend). What a great fun gig and both fantastic players. I guess Dave Peacock is underrated because the music most of us know him for isn’t seen as “cred”. Folks forget that they were both busy session players pre-Chas’n’Dave and you don’t get there by being shoddy players.

Could be wrong , but probabky because he is typecast . Anyone that can hold their own with Ritchie Blackmore , can't be too shabby. 
Great musicians . Doing those Chas'n'Dave vocals ontop of playing their instruments is hard work in itself .

Under-rated = someone whose playing I like, but who is not as widely appreciated as I think they should be.

 

Dave's a very good musician. As pointed out above, he was (and probably still is, although he's almost 80 now, so he may well be taking life easy these days) a session player. it's in the nature of the job to do it well and not be a household name or someone the music press raves about. I don't suppose he's bothered. He's made a good living out of playing music, which is an achievement in itself.

In the mid 90's, I was working for the main turn on a show through the summer months down in Torquay. Chas, Dave and Mickey (The Drummer) were on the bill as well.

I had a fantastic time socialising with them all after the shows, but lordy, they could drink for England. Dave was a very fine musician, a real gentleman and a proper laugh. I also got to play his Precision Bass a few times.

On top of that, we also had first hand tuition on how to sing that tongue twisting 'Rabbit' song. Especially the yapping bit at the end...lol.

I`m not surprised, I read in Chas` book that Dave went out at lunchtime and had a few too many, and that whoever it was that was with him was amazed that he then started drinking cans of Miller Lite in order to dilute what he`d already drunk in order to sober up!

DP is an exemplary musician indeed. How he plays that fast walking line singing those Rabbit lyrics is a mystery. He's second only to Macca. Scrap that, hes equal to Macca playing and singing bass.

I used to work with Chas's daughter Juliet many years ago and she became the keyboard player in my band at the time. We rehearsed at the barn/studio in the garden of their farmhouse in Essex most weeks.

 

Every now and again we would get kicked out so Chas and Dave could do some recording in there. They would randomly turn up with a crate of brandy and loads of cigars, boot us out and stay in there for days at a time putting tracks down. 

 

And another memory was sitting in the cottage after rehearsals at 1am with Chas's wife bringing tea and toast out, everyone having a bash on the old piano and a 60's PBass leaned up in the inglenook fireplace! 

 

Just the warmest and kindest people you could possibly meet. Juliet is playing keyboards with Eddie Tenpole at the moment...

No, I avoided the dreaded Poker games, although our MD got caught out a couple of times. But I did end up at a Steak eating contest in a pub in Brixham. 

The pub governor hosted the event to raise money for charity. Chas, Dave and Mickey had to eat as much Steak as they could manage. I can't remember the rules, but of course, it turned into an afterhours drinking competition

that moved into a side room of the pub. This included the governor as well, along with me and the other musicians I was working with. It was quite a boozy late one. 

 

The next day, we found out someone had broken into the pub and emptied out a till without anyone noticing. The governor hadn't cashed up.

So underrated, that I initially wondered who he was! "Didn't he play in midfield for Tottenham back in the late 90s?"

 

Are there any tutorials, or isolated bass lines, that I can listen to? Or is it a case of slowing down the YouTube videos and learning his lines, one bar at a time?

 

 

I suspect that the serious musical talent was overlooked, because of the comical lyrics.

 If you install the Moises app on your PC, or phone, you can isolate the bass track and i believe slow the track down. For the free version you can import 5 tracks a month to play around with.
