rwillett
Hi, I can see a number of excellent build diaries for cabinets, but haven't seen anything about building a FRFR speaker/cabinet. Given the wide number of relatively cheap class D amps that are around, I would have thought that the more technically minded would have turned their minds to this. My reasons for looking to a FRFR speaker are: 1. I have limited space as t'other half doesn't want the house "cluttered with your crap". 2. I play bass and guitar (equally badly) and would prefer fewer things. 3. I have a Tonex pedal board AND a Mod Dwarf pedal board and would like a decent FRFR speaker to use with them, especially the ToneX. 4. I don't want really want a (supposedly) 2000W Headrush 212 FRFR speaker or a Spark Cab or a Katana Boss or Spark 40 and not use the modelling element. 5. I fancy doing something along with building guitars. <-- This may be the actual reason. Any links or suggestions welcomed please. Thanks Rob
JPJ
My understanding is that the Basschat 1x12 design is FRFR and reading the comments from those who have completed builds, it certainly appears to be so. I’m sure you’ll get a lot of comments suggesting you simply buy a PA top cab and run through that as your power amp & speaker combo and I know of a couple of local bass players who have gone down that route with varying degrees of success. rwillett
@JPJ Thanks for the reply. I have read the the 1x12 design thread, but for some reason I missed the bit about it being pretty much an FRFR design, my bad My knowledge of suitable PA amps to pair with the 1x12 design is slightly less than my knowledge of kitten surgery, I dabble as does everyone, but I'm no vet I'll ask in that thread. I did note that somebody had put a small amp with the speaker to make a combo, my intention is to make this simple (once complete) and reduce leads, power cables and what not. I thought I knew which thread you were referring to and after looking for it, I realise I have no idea which thread you mean. There's quite a lot of threads that this could be, any pointers welcomed. tauzero
I would guess at the one covering the 1x12 with tweeter and crossover.
rwillett
I was looking at pulling the trigger on a Yamaha HS7 but will now read this first. Thanks Edited October 11 by rwillett
LukeFRC
if you remember my cab at the bass bash - that was essentially the bass chat 1x12 with horn
rwillett
@LukeFRC I vaguely remember it. I recall I was more interested in your little effects box that made strange noises I looked at the things I have to do: Such as printing a few more guitars and basses. I want to go back and redo the crap job I did with some early ones and the next big one is a headless and active Thunderbird bass. Sorting out the pickup winder which is still sitting on my desk, powered up but needs significant code development. I might do that over the Xmas break. Learning how to use a router to make pickguards and importantly keep all my fingers. Setting up a few guitars I've already printed. Sorting out the pedal board and PSU and mixer. I still need to work all week to pay the household bills and keep my family, and especially my 18 year old daughter, in the manner they'd like to become accustomed to. So in the end I decided to just buy the Yamaha monitor and put this cabinet build on my backlog as I have no time left. If you come to the next bass bash in May 2025, please bring it again and I'll have a play. Hopefully by then I may have done the points 1-5. Chienmortbb
This is not as easy as it sounds although I have been looking at the idea for a while.

Look at the old fEARful (sic) threads on Talkbass. Those threads are a bit messed up by now due to board software changes but the plans are still readily available with a bit of looking around. If you go this route you'll want the "True Three Way" crossover variant, which some TB'ers developed outside of the original designer Dave Green's purview. He did approve it somewhat reluctantly though. I've done a few more uptown 15/6/1 versions of my own design too, but never really documented them that thoroughly.
