short scale comparison

For what it's worth . A short scale can be handy now and then , a few years ago I moved from an EB-3 to a Reverend Dub King which is much more versatile . No two ways a Dub K. is a weird looking bass and a few bandmates have given me a little good natured static over it so I picked up a beautiful DeArmond StarFire bass , mint at a decent price . Switched over and gave it my best but now looking at ditching it and going back to the Rev , ugly but a well made bass that does it all . looks ain't everything .

Ask them to buy you a Wilcock or a Serek, they’ll pipe down pretty sharpish

It was hearing one being played on Saturday Night Live that sent me down the short scale rabbit hole. I’d like a Midwestern, but think I’d prefer a Wilcock Mullarkey (I played one, it was glorious).

interesting .......but out of my price range for a s.scale being a MIA Jazz bass guy , my guess is you can only get so much mojo out of a s.short . but the StanleyClarke Alembic probably would do the trick .

I like the look of Serek and Wilcock but I went down the shortscale route to make life easier in some of the smaller pubs and clubs (singer is a lefty and for some reason I’m always on his right…). £3k basses are a definite no no in some of these places. I’ve ended up on a Sandberg Lionel with a Sterling Ray shorty back up. The Lionel is pretty awesome - don’t think I’d get any benefit dropping another £1.5k.

The Stanley Clarke style alembic Shorty did it for me. I mainly play long scale 5 stringers but i prefer the a short scale 4 string over a long scale 4 string. 😊

The SC Alembics are great. Interesting as they have a filter preamp. A more affordable and conventional one is the Chowny SWB, which is a very well made guitar (I have an Indian made one, the newer ones are reportedly even better). Very slim necks if you’re having hand issues.

To get to the sound of the Alembic, a short scale filter preamp ACG nails it. Second hand they can be ridiculously undervalued.
