It has more than a ring of truth about it, the reference to the upright bass and the p-bass is nice. No mention of it being an elderly relatives and he knows nothing about guitars or he found it in a cupboard.

 

If I still lived in Greenwich, I'd pop round, check it out and rip his hand off (and take the bass as well). Sadly I'm a little too far north,
