In fact the first Acid Jazz release was a single by Rob Galliano called "Frederick lies still" in 1988. Chris Bangs did come up with the name as Meterman says but Eddie Piller really established the genre and label and was the real force behind it all. James Taylor Quartet didn't appear on the Acid Jazz label until 1995 with the "Hand of the inevitable "album having previously been on Polydor and then Big Life records. There was loads of stuff being put out in those early days and the Totally Wired compilation albums on Acid Jazz have a lot of interesting bands on them. The label itself is still running and releasing new material. Gaz how did Incognito fit in with all this Acid Jazz if you have any perspective.?. I remember way back as the Jazz Funk album and even before then with Bluey and Light of the world when I knew about Mr JP Maunicks music . Even before then there was a band I can't remember the name of..

I think Incognito came out of the Brit-Funk scene [ Beggar & Co, Light of the world etc..] and became associated with acid jazz when they signed with Giles's Talking Loud label and released "Always There" which became a hit in 1991 [ JTQ actually did a version of that tune on "Do your own thing" in 89/90 which predates the Incog version and has similar horn arrangements ]. Some of the more well known "acid jazz" bands existed a few years before the label such as the Heavies, Push/Galliano, JTQ and Incognito when it was the Rare Groove scene and others came along once Acid Jazz the label was established such as Mother Earth, Corduroy, Sandals and Jamiroquai etc.. lotte
I remember going into the couple of record shops that were in my town when I was in my late teens and pretty much buying anything that was on the AJ label, confident that I'd almost certainly love it. A couple that jumped into my mind when seeing the thread were The New Jersey Kings (just a rebadged JTQ I think) and Emporers New Clothes:
Japhet
Nice bass on this (probably need headphones). No idea who it is.
sshorepunk
The acid jazz scene, as a label and a 'genre' was good to be around at the time, still is A few bands seemed to merge out of Brit funk and other places, but some great bands emerged, many of which I still play regular today also use when I DJ I remember buying the first Jamiroquai releases on AJ, with Andrew Levy (?) on bass, before they went to Sony Saw JTQ many times, with @gaz66 on bass, great live band, and more recently with Andrew Mckinney. Just picked up A Few useful Tips about Living Underground on vinyl for a vinyl only night I do, probably my favorite JTQ album. Need Sound Stylistics vinyl now 🙂 Mother Earth were one of my favorite bands at the time, Neil Corcoran nailed some great lines, saw them with Australian band Skunk Hour in MAnchester Saw a lot of bands around that time, I also remember BNH supporting simply red somewhere, they were better than SR for me And then there's Galliano! And they are back at it and i have tickets for Manchester next month, not bought the album yet, waiting for the show, they do have Ernie Mckone on bass, great player I just remembered Mr Exe, Paul Powell, Million Smiles, some nice playing on that by Mr Powell, rumours of him playing on a Jamir' track as well

Not sure why, or if Ernie plans to switch back to bass with them but I thought it was a bit weird that he wasn't on bass duties? It's not like he can't play! I met Crispin the drummer from Galliano a couple of weeks ago and we went to see Ernie at a Dee C Lee gig [ I'd played on the album and he was doing the gig ] and he was saying that the Galliano band is more or less the original members. Sadly the guitarist Mark Van De Gucht passed away last year, so I guess Ernie was taking over. I remember him saying Ernie's son was now playing with them, so maybe he was on bass.
gaz66
The great thing about the Acid Jazz scene in the 90's was that a lot of the bands who were hardly household names could go out and play to a 1000 or more people up and down the country and do proper tours and actually make a living from it. There really was a great scene and a lot of people were into it. In all the bands there was great scope for playing and trying stuff out. I doubt that could happen again as the business has changed so much and there are nowhere near as many venues out there or people buying music.

Oh no, I didn't know that about Mark, far too young for him to go Rest In Peace. Oddly enough I have Mark to thank for a session gig that lasted 12 years because when he quit Shawn Lee's band, I took his place. I think Shawn had just left Talkin' Loud, but we often would have Ernie on bass, and Spry from Galliano sometimes too. Mark was a great guitar player, streets ahead of me and I didn't mind admitting it to Shawn's band. But they put up with my caveman guitar and Hammond playing for ages. But Mark was on another level. Huge respect for him 👍 Makes sense about the bass / guitar swap now too, thank you man. Actually, you must have played with Shawn at some point, no? Loads of the Acid Jazzers and a lot of folks with a Gilles / Talkin' Loud connection did stints with him and he did a ton of sessions for the same crowd. Possible? Yes it's really sad, Mark did go way too early. He was always amazing. I have played with Shawn a couple of times. He played drums on some tracks on two projects I did after I left JTQ- The Super-Phonics and The Sound Stylistics. Jan from the Heavies also did some drums on The Super-Phonics album. Shawn is an incredible musician and he's great on all instruments.
TheLowDown
Some cracking bands listed so far which happen to be amongst my current faves for the last several years, such as Haggis Horns, the New Mastersounds. More good stuff includes The Underbelly featuring Roxie Ray, Dojo Cuts, Lack of Afro,...
meterman
I still have a slightly battered original Talkin' Loud sticker on the back of one of my synths. Would love an original Acid Jazz one to go with it 😎 I just know someone one here will be hoarding them! Come on, own up!

sshorepunk
Great version of a classic GSH track by Mother Earth
sshorepunk
I’m listening to many bands that are linked to the genre ‘psychedelic soul’ It’s something bands from as far back as the 70’s have been associated with, such as Funkadelic and early Temptations With bands such as the monophonics, Black Pumas and Orgone, to me they are very much ‘Acid Jazz’ but I always take Acid jazz as a very British thing so it’s not a label (if that’s the right word) bands outside of the uk use very much Edited October 30 by sshorepunk
