Who makes a decent 32 scale P in the UK?

Looking into getting a custom medium scale precision built, or maybe a PJ, Fender-ish vibe with a few upgrades. I know Manton would probably be a good choice, are there any other UK builders that are worth looking into? Budget - let’s say £2k max. Thanks!

I'd always recommend an ACG everyone, but if you want something more traditionally accurate and old school, Jon Shuker would absolutely sort you out, as would Manton Customs.

I think Overwater do a PJ but I they're WAY over your budget starting over £3200 for a basic classic P!

Jon will do a 32" scale.
He's very accommodating, I wouldn't hesitate to give him a shout.

This isn't meant to sound condescending, but have you asked him? I appreciate it lists on his site that its 33-35" but a quick google brought me back to here and this post.

Maybe @MacDaddy can advise?

Mike Walsh at Zoot/Iceni has been doing a lot of 32" scales recently, you'd probably be looking at the Funkmeister shape with whatever pickups etc you want.

Yeah, I really like his basses but I contacted him many years ago about a build (nothing fancy or out of the ordinary) and didn't get a very friendly response, put me off dealing with him tbh. Also ideally I'd like to support a UK builder if possible, partly because it's nice to support people closer to home, and partly to avoid the stress of taxes /shipping costs etc.

His responses lose something in translation, he often comes across as being very short with people but he is actually fine

A friend went to one the Saturday clinics he runs and said he was great to work with. He didn't have a Shuker (which look utterly amazing, there's a black bass there that Hotblack Desiato would have) but it was no issue at all.

 

Just my halfpenny worth.

Yup, I have heard that too. I think there's two factors in play, English isn not his 1st language and I also expect he gets a load of emails.
In person, I am told he's a really genuine and warm guy, Adrian Maruszczyk that is.

 

Jon Shuker, I have dealt with, and he's super friendly and laid back. A little slow on comms sometimes, but I don't think that's uncommon among luthiers, as their time is better spent whittling wood into instruments :)

I currently have 3 Shuker's (with plans for another) all are 32" 😁

You forgot to add that they're CRAZY too, will #3 be of a similar flavour?

Tony Edwards built me a short scale PB a few years ago and it came in at around £1K. Things have gone up a bit but I would imagine he could do a 32” well within your budget. https://tonyedwardsguitars.co.uk. I happen to know he is on holiday at the moment, so you might not get a response immediately, if you do want to follow up with him.

 

I am very happy with the bass. Babicz bridge and Tony’s own hand wound pickups. Probably not the best picture and this was to my design, so might not suit everybody’s tastes.

Yep he’d be on my list if he didn’t have a full order book!

 

We almost did a 32” 4 string P two years ago, but it ended up being a 5 string J shape with single P pickup 😅

Shuker 4 will probably be fanfret, with a couple of tweaks.
