It doesn't even need to be synchronized for the benefit of increased power efficiency (though it may be necessary for other reasons such as EMC control, THD reduction or purely functionality depending on how the topology is achieved.) The PWM frequency is high enough that it all averages out with the lower audio frequency and the reactive power reclamation still works. 1 Quote
