ezbass Posted Saturday at 19:36 Share Posted Saturday at 19:36 Getting quotes always seems so difficult. If they’re too busy to take on the work, they should say so, rather than keeping folk waiting on the costings and then potentially waiting on the actual work.

I might say 'this is what you need to do based on what you've told me' but not get involved in the minutiae.

If everyone paid their taxes properly, especially those who can well afford it, there would be enough money in the pot to allow for easier access to support for people that need it. It's lovely and heartwarming that this whole thing has showcased generosity of spirit and community like it has but it also only came about because the support systems are not adequate. I know it's not a direct correlation but still, I think making sure people pay what is fair is far from something that should be looked down on. And, before you ask, I am not a traffic warden or an estate agent 🤣 5

I still have good dealings with some that I have direct contact with, but I also know of a few from back in the day who were utter b'stards. It must also be said that the system nowadays is a joke, but again that's a different thread. I only come here for a warm happy glow

And, before you ask, I am not a traffic warden or an estate agent 🤣 Well, maybe for elsewhere, but I think that people have a duty to pay the taxes they are required to pay, avoid paying those they aren't, and overall operate within the law (ie. not engage in tax evasion) legal ": Avoidance (legal) includes such things as: putting investments in and ISA, shifting a payment from one tax year to the next, adjusting pension contributions to stay below a tax threshold, buying duty-free, and suchlike. Evasion (illegal) can be: not declaring VAT, bringing in money in suitcases, buying something overseas and not declaring it, doing cash-in-hand deals, charging VAT when not VAT registered, etc. I dislike the official attempts to conflate avoidance with evasion and would say that the concept of "fair" and "proper" is somewhat elastic and will vary from person to person and government-to-government. Me, I'm an employee, so my tax status is pretty much defined automatically. Rant over, and back on-topic: I think it's great that a large number of people have individually contributed modest amounts of money to add up to a total to help a respected colleague; this isn't a one-off (we've done it before) and it's part of the character of the BC community.
