rjb
I'm keeping an eye out for a 5 but also have a rather disturbing urge to get a P-bass shape/config! I know about Sadowskys, the Fender American Standard V and the Sandberg P5 but was wondering if there are any other options (especially at a more mid-level price). There seems to be lack of mid priced instruments of this type, so I guess demand ain't that high!
chris_b
For less than the price of a new Sadowsky you could look at a Shuker P5.
OutToPlayJazz
Sandberg California PM5 - The range topping "extreme" model is a stunner.
rjb
Mmm, the Shuker option is one I hadn't thought of. The Sandbergs also look brilliant.

Deep Thought
5-string P's seem to be a rare breed. I fancy one, but apart from a Squier I'm not sure you can get any more, Fender don't seem to do much, especially not in the mid-range. I'd love to see a MIM 5-string Precision. Otherwise it's the makers already mentioned, none of which are especially cheap, if, like me, you only want to dip your toe, so to speak. dannybuoy
The Squier 5-string P has jazz pickups in it which means it's not really a P anymore! The Yamaha BB415 is a great bass for not a lot of dough, 5 strings in a PJ configuration, meant to sound pretty close to a Fender too. ~tl
Aside from the American Std. Precision V, there doesn't seem to be a lot of choice from Fender/Squier these days. They don't even do the American Dlx. model any more... Looks very odd, even though the actual size of each half is equal Edited June 4, 2009 by OldGit

http://www.mikelull.com/Instruments/P_Series.htm
It was the Mike Lull one that got me into this 5 string Precision mallarchy in the first place, or to be precise it was the review of one of his that did. When I worked out the total cost including all the import charges his "not quite a custom" P5 ended up being significantly more than the Jon Shuker version, and didn't have side LED's included. I have since had a go on a Lull jazz at Jam Guitars in Bristol and it was OK but not stunning.....
