Born 2B Mild Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 I do like my Shuttle, it's the best (and loudest) amp I've ever had, but there are times when I'd like to use three 8ohm cabs. If I replaced it for an amp head that could do 2ohms, what should it be? The lighter the better. Your suggestions are sought. Quote

I haven't omce across anything comparable to the Shuttle that does 2ohms, has it got a preamp out so you can run a slave amp? Quote
Kongo Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 (edited) Only 2 ohm heads I know are older Peavey models. Other than that, why not buy a Stereo head and add another cab and run 4? Be balanced then. Edited May 30, 2009 by Kongo Quote
EBS_freak Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 EBS, SWR(at some point?), older Peavey are the ones the immediately spring to mind. multi cab option is cool! check my signature. Quote

henry norton Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 Alot of old valve heads can drive 2 ohms, although it's about as far from your shuttle size and weight wise as is possible to get.... Quote

warwickhunt Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 One or two of the Glockenklang heads allow 3x8ohm loads but not 2ohms. However, when you are talking uber-lightweight then you are more restricted. If you are considering a change why not get a seperate preamp and a digi power section that will do 2 ohms? Quote

As an example, my Hartke would run a pair of cabs at 175 watts each, and the single at 240 watts - a difference of less than 1.5 dB. A Quote
4-string-thing Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 The old Acoustic Control Corporation heads would run at 2 ohms, I believe. I'm not sure if the new ones will, or if they will ever arrive in Britain! Quote

chris_b Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 Mesa Boogie, Thunderfunk, Ampeg, GK, SWR, Eden all have amps that go to 2 ohm. You can find the models which do! Quote
haruki Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 I know the old red fronted swr 350 goes down to 2 ohm - not the heaviest amp around either and quite compact too. Quote

DirkThrust Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 The EA iAMP 500 and iAMP 800 will both run at 2 ohms. Quote

On that note, I wonder how easy it would be to modify an output stage so it could drive a lower resistance? Quote

Also, its lower 'impedance', rather than resistance, means it's alternating current and varies with frequency. One of my vintage bass amps only has choice of 8 or 16. Quote
bobbytodd Posted May 31, 2009 Posted May 31, 2009 the marshell mb450h runs at 2 ohms.and so does the peavey max but that weights a ton Quote

I am in fact referring to Trace Elliot heads like mine, but this is by no means light and I'm not suggesting it as an option. Quote

However, I was offering the suggestion of selling the Shuttle and getting either a rack or pedal pre-amp; otherwise you'd be better off going for a powered wedge (or expensive option like the Berg IP) or combo running the signal from a line-out from the Shuttle.
