Minor changes to the management of Basschat.co.uk

This is the first of a series of messages to let you know that there will be a few changes to how Basschat is managed in the future.

The reasons for all the changes are:
1) To allow Ped & Kiwi to focus more on development and promotion of the forum (although they will still be around if needed by any members).
2) To allow the increased moderation workload that has come with the growth of the forum to be spread over an expanded number of moderators, while retaining some degree of consistency.
3) To reduce the potential for personal reprisals in the event disruptive behaviour needs to be managed by any individual moderator.
4) To keep Basschat a pleasant place to use for the majority of members.
The biggest change is that Ped and Kiwi have decided to formally delegate the day to day management of the forum to the Global Moderators. After discussion with the Global Moderators, some of these changes are likely to include reducing the number of warnings before further action is taken from 10 to 5, start to weed out undeclared duplicate accounts and make some minor changes to the wording in the Terms and Conditions. For the sake of clarity, the moderating team will also be placing greater emphasis on the Terms and Conditions when addressing any instances of disruptive behaviour in the future.

For the 99% of Basschatters who currently use the forum in a considerate and responsible manner, these changes are being made with your browsing experience uppermost in our minds.

This message has also been sent using the bulk email facility but has been posted here to respect any admin email opt-out settings in members' preferences.

As ever, we welcome constructive comments.

cheers,

Ped and Kiwi

This sounds like a very astute move and I can see it having a positive effect on making Basschat a more friendly environment for it's existing members and for any potenial members alike.

I'm suprised to learn that there has been a "10 warnings" system, very generous, making this 5, may make one or two members think twice about about their posts.

Steve.

Sounds like a really good line to take.

Spending a fair bit of time in the biking forums, I have seen good sites destroyed by a few disruptive individuals but also one particular case of too small an 'in crowd' taking offence at some critical comment and ending up censoring everything.

A group of Global Mods should prevent either extreme.

Just to clarify, when you say number of warnings reducing to 5 from 10, what counts as a warning? It is 10 complaints received about a post/member, or 10 pms sent to a disruptive member?

Also, are we able to check how many warnings we're on? I've been banned before but was not aware of the 10 warning threshold.

Do you mean you've just sent me a PM, or it takes 10 PMs to get banned?

According to Johngh, I was up to 80% a while back, and have since had 2 more PMs from Mods. Does this mean I should now be banned? I'm not trying to stir it up, just trying to assess what the current state of play is and what the new rules actually mean in practice.

Nope, it is a 5 strikes policy. You will know when you have used up a strike, believe me. But we won't be having to use it much I hope! The main thing was for me and Kiwi to get the rules set up for the new mods and revamp the T&Cs which came with the software and aren't tailored to fit our needs as much as we would like.

As ever, if you have a problem, report the post to a moderator (not me or kiwi preferably because it short circuits the system) and it will be discussed and sorted - if a warning is to be given it will be made obvious to the individual being warned and simply contain the nature of the rule broken. We used to have a more relaxed and organic system where we could discuss at length various points and come to some sort of agreement, but with the size of the forum now it is becoming a grey area which soon will be a really clear and concise system.

But hey - as long as we can all chill and enjoy ourselves, the main thing we want to do it free up some time to introduce some new features, offers, competitions, products and events for everyone to enjoy.

Please let us know if there are any more questions, comments and ideas. I will be about to answer what I can (though I am not that good on the software side of things) and kiwi will be about on the 'nightshift' :0)

Cheers
Oh and thanks for the positive comments and support thus far.

That you will!! Double barrel insults might provoke a double strike, depending on the severity! I might give you a strike back if you put some bleedin' clothes on!

Ped, you love a bit of male nudity. I've seen those "photography" magazines you subscribe to.

All this sounds good, Ped.

It seems that many problems seem to stem from non-observance of 'The Guidelines'. I'm thinking specifically about vendettas against mods, failure to 'agree to disagree'. Will the guidelines be amended and / or strengthened, maybe by an appropriate reference in the T&C's?

Hi mate,

The whole structure needs to be - for want of a better word - 'dehumanised'. I agree that part of what we want to get away from is any degree of flexibility when it comes to the guidelines (so they will indeed be revamped and updated a bit for the sake of clarity) so everyone knows where they stand. For example, on Talkbass I got a warning for using a particular swear word and I simply had a notch added with a link to the guideline I had broken. It is much simpler and 'cleaner' and should mean we spend less time having to argue the toss with people who think they have been done a gross injustice!

I really hope this isn't coming across as us wanting to tell you off more - quite the opposite. It is really to address shortcomings we should have foreseen a while back, but we didn't really anticipate such massive growth so quickly.

Cheers, hope that answers your question, sort of? :0)

Hi Skank, the main change will address that point. But the T&C's could probably benefit from a general review anyway to see if there's any way in which we can make them simpler to read but still relevant. Hopefully I will do this by the end of the week, subject to any comments from the Global Mods (who will be using them as support for their decisions).

I think anybody who gets a warning should have a "Silly Sausage" icon embedded into their user name/avatar.

Maybe Sugden could do a proprioritary render of said "Silly Sausage". I have one ready but I think I would get a warning if I posted it. :)

OK, Ped and I discussed the T&C's with the Global Mods and there wasn't a lot of amendments that were necessary apart from this expansion to Section 6.
