BassAgent Posted October 27, 2024 Posted October 27, 2024 I love this beautiful Yamaha TRB I own: And I play it a lot, with rounds (not planning on putting flats on it, no). I really want to preserve the fingerboard, just like I did with my fretless Jazz, and have it epoxied. I've never seen that done on a fretless TRB and have no idea what the difference is, soundwise. Has anyone epoxied their TRB? Quote
JoeEvans Posted October 28, 2024 Posted October 28, 2024 Did it make much difference to the sound when you epoxied the fingerboard on your jazz? Quote
BassAgent Posted October 28, 2024 Author Posted October 28, 2024 Well, it was 20 years ago so I don't really remember well but what I do remember is that it got a lot more "mwaahhh" and a little bit less low end. 1 Quote
JoeEvans Posted October 28, 2024 Posted October 28, 2024 Have you still got the jazz? I'd be interested to know how well the coating has stood up - I've read mixed reports, some people saying that it got scuffed quite quickly. Quote
BassAgent Posted October 28, 2024 Author Posted October 28, 2024 I do. It was done by a Dutch luthier and it's still in excellent condition 1 Quote
BlueMoon Posted October 28, 2024 Posted October 28, 2024 I was thinking about doing the same thing but with a polyester coating (as I believe was standard on Pedulla Buzz fretless basses). In the end I didn’t go for it and quite like the stock bass sound with Ground-wound strings. Quote
JoeEvans Posted October 29, 2024 Posted October 29, 2024 Two-part polyurethane yacht varnish is also incredibly hard-wearing and would be a lot easier to apply than epoxy - just prep, mask up the neck and do loads of coats, rubbing down with super-fine sandpaper in-between. Quote
BassAgent Posted October 29, 2024 Author Posted October 29, 2024 Ah yes that is true, but if I'd do it' I'd have a luthier do it for me 1 Quote
