Sterling Stingray short scale - anyone loaded an active preamp into one?

Recommended Posts

Swapped to short scale basses because of a chronic wrist problem. Find them much easier to play and less painful even though I still have two full scale ones getting dusty.

My Sire U5 is my current go-to, but I fancy that active SR sound that I had with my old 34" scale Stingrays.

Can you straight drop an active preamp in there + battery without any extra routing for the battery compartment (something like a John East approach to jazz basses)?

Has anyone done it and with what? Also would it be an idea to swap out the pickup at the same time?

Alternatively, stick it through a Sadowsky SBP2 (other preamps are available) for some 2 band action and still retain the pick-up switching and passive tone control. I realise that this isn’t what you’ve asked.
