cheddatom Posted Saturday at 12:02 Share Posted Saturday at 12:02 Our singer apparently hits his front teeth on the grille of his sm58 beta. Is there a replacement grille that looks the same, but isn't made of rigid metal? I've had a search but can't find anything. He can't be the only one with this issue!? Have a search for 'SM58 pop filter'; this will bring up a series of foam covers for the mic' dome. Inexpensive, but would probably need replacing quite often. If he's biting the dome, he's far too close to the mic', of course, but, if that's how he sings... There's a big difference in performance, too, between an SM58 and a Beta 58 (the Beta is a far better mic', and the dome grill is deliberately more dent-resistant compared to the SM58...). It's not a Good Idea to replace the dome completely, as it's there to protect the capsule, so a 'soft dome' would protect his teeth, but not the mic'..! Hope this helps. cheddatom Posted Saturday at 15:28 Author Share Posted Saturday at 15:28 He can't deal with the look of the wind shield! I know it's technique but ironically he's too long in the tooth

Cato Posted Saturday at 16:21 Share Posted Saturday at 16:21 Stick a couple of nails on top of the mike. They should jab him the face before he has a chance to hit his teeth on the grill. 2
Jean-Luc Pickguard Posted Saturday at 16:32 Share Posted Saturday at 16:32 I bet he'd stop hitting his teeth on the grille if you put the mic down your underpants in front of him for a few seconds before the gig
fretmeister Posted Saturday at 16:39 Share Posted Saturday at 16:39 Foam things are great. Especially when having to use someone else’s scummy microphone.
Cliff Edge Posted Sunday at 16:29 Share Posted Sunday at 16:29 Singers should be made to realise they sound much better if they don’t try eating the microphone. I had one singer who made his SM58 shield fall apart with rust. Fortunately for him replacements are available.

cheddatom
He's been doing this for 35 years. His teeth are all chipped but he still does it. He knows it's bad technique but insists he can't change the habit. I was hoping to find a silver basket, like the standard one, but made out of rubber or something like that

I was hoping to find a silver basket, like the standard one, but made out of rubber or something like that The metal is there to protect the capsule so whatever you find it will have to go over the metal grill. Otherwise he's going to end up hitting his teeth on the capsule and killing the mic. Bare in mind that the grill isn't just a thing slapped on the mic randomly. The shape and distance from the capsule has been calculated - that's why there are many different designs. Even the material is important. Something soft and rubber will resonate with his voice and in turn cause more / different resonance in the air hitting the capsule. It will sound different, and probably not good. He needs to change his technique. Get a cattle prod for rehearsals or wire up the existing grill to a car battery. He'll learn quickly enough! cheddatom
I was thinking a very firm rubber would be fine. Rigid enough not to change the sound of the mic, and soft enough not to chip his teeth. Ideally it'd still have the threaded metal ring at the bottom and be a direct replacement. Wishful thinking I guess. Oh well, he can afford the dentist bills I couldn't be clearer on the changing technique front. It's not happening
fretmeister
In my nearly 40 years of performing I don't think I've ever seen a rubber or even plastic grill replacement that can screw on. I wonder if you can get someone to 3D print something? There are loads of one-off 3D print services available on platforms such as Fiverr. If you can find the proper specs for the screw bit then it could be possible. Or maybe get a used grill from somewhere and cut off everything except the screw bit and then glue a 3D printed part to that?
cheddatom
maybe there's some sort of coating I could dip a 58 grille into?

Dan Dare
So he "can't deal with the look of the wind shield" and refuses to learn proper mic' technique, then complains he hits his teeth on the grille? Sounds like a him problem. Why get dragged into an issue that's entirely of his making? He's just trying to make it someone else's problem. Don't play his game. If he says he " too long in the tooth", tell him the problem will eventually solve itself as he'll wear his gnashers down bashing them on the mic' 😃

He just mentioned he'd have to book back into the dentist and so I asked him about it. He said he's tried to stop doing it but can't. I personally agree with him on the look of a windshield, it's very much not rock and roll! Yes, it's his problem, no I've not been dragged into it. I was just hoping that someone would be able to help in terms of an actual product, as opposed to pointing out the obvious
Dad3353
I was going to suggest sacrificing a cut-up tennis ball over the grill, but if even a 'pop'-shield is no good for 'looks', he'll just have to carry on his amateur dentistry. Vanity, eh..?
