Soft Grille for mic?

I was going to suggest sacrificing a cut-up tennis ball over the grill, but if even a 'pop'-shield is no good for 'looks', he'll just have to carry on his amateur dentistry. Vanity, eh..? -_-

I think the image of an act is very important. I'm not sure it's vanity in the context of a stage show? Either way a 58 with a big foam wind shield is not going to look "cool" to the audience

Maybe change the style of mic? Go for one on those 1950s looking ones. Still looks cool, perhaps even cooler than an SM58 (YMMV), and reduces the teeth on grill potential as it’s a different shape altogether.

Gum shields, then. -_-

I have an old Thomann / T.Bone copy of the Shure Super 55 and it's actually pretty good.

Mind you I've never tried a real Super 55 but the internals are supposed to be very similar / the same as a BETA 58A.

RRP is £265 these days, but Thomann have them for £205

https://www.thomann.co.uk/shure_super_55_deluxe.htm

EDIT - Shure do a cheaper one that looks similar at about £155 - the SH55 too.

Great recording mic, not great live though.

Haven't tried mine live yet. Seems to have fairly good off axis rejection. Works fine in the rehearsal room for a old school thrash metal band.

What is the issue on stage?

I'm an anarchist; I do as I think fit, and accord this freedom to others, of course. If the bloke wants to bash his teeth on the mic', despite others trying to help, let him; it's his choice. I don't understand it, but... if that's what he wants... :|

As for foam pop shields not being "rock n' roll", most punters aren't going to notice in a pub or club. The obvious point is that you don't need a pop shield the size of a football. Thin foam ones are available, believe it or not. Not much use as pop shields, but they will protect the gnashers from impact. Incidentally, old geezers aren't rock n' roll, either (I speak as an OG), no matter how hard they try to pretend they are.

Our singer apparently hits his front teeth on the grille of his sm58 beta. Is there a replacement grille that looks the same, but isn't made of rigid metal? I've had a search but can't find anything. He can't be the only one with this issue!?

Why is this your problem?

He's probably the only one daft enough to still have this 'problem' for so long. Most other folk learn, evolve and move on. :|

I keep coming back to this thread in slight disbelief.

What on earth does it sound like to the audience when you singer repeatedly klonks his teeth on the mic???

Nevermind him worrying about not looking rock and roll by using a wind shield what about sounding absolutely dire?

A few friends, admittedly not long in the tooth, use the pop shield foam on their vocal mics and it looks good, but if your vocalist really can't do it, then I'd do the following:

Replacement sm58 3rd party grille balls can be found in ebay for a couple of quid.

Buy one (or a few)

Buy a pack of foam windshields.

Buy a tube of contact adhesive.

Carefully cut the windshields so they only really cover the top part of the replacement grille (ie the section that gets a good chewing)

Affix the foam Using a couple of judicious blobs of contact adhesive on the outside edge.

This won't last very long, but will be easy to pull off and replace and if you make a couple can be swapped mid gig if necessary.

Thanks for all the replies! I've been away for a few days...

It's not my problem at all, I just offered to find out for him while we were on the way to a gig. I'll see if he fancies a Shure Super 55

The band actually does pretty well playing all over the country in decent venues. I personally don't have vocals in my monitor so I don't know if it's audible, but I've never heard anyone complain.

What about swapping the mic for something he can't actually get in his mouth / reach with his teeth?

Several colours are available

When I can find it, I'll dig out and take photos of Mr Venom's old Super 55. I had to replace the foam twice and he chipped a tooth on it more than once. Despite the fact that hasn't been used for a number of years it still looks pretty disgusting...

Get foam ones and make it a feature.

For each gig use a foam that matches his shirt. Or if he decides to get a purple mohawk, get purple ones. That sort of thing.

Or just use a plain black one that nobody will notice at all. The punters have no idea about differences between microphones anyway.

Chipped a tooth on a Super 55? In that case I'll not suggest it!

I'm just going to explain that there's no product available to make up for his terrible technique 🤣

Stick a 2 inch thick bit of foam rubber to his upper lip so it bangs into the mic first.

Then tell him it's just 'training wheels' for a couple of weeks until he gets used to being further away... but warn him that after a month you will hot glue it to his face if you have to.
