Squier 6 String Jazz, so who’s tempted at this price?

I really shouldn't be - I've done 6 strings a couple of times now, and whilst I genuinely like them for the novelty and have no problem playing them, it's not a feature I really need so they eventually fall out of use when the novelty wears off and they get sold on. But at that price and with that nut width, yeah, I could easily be tempted to go round again.

I wonder how the neck profile on those feels (graphite reinforced slim C, as per specs).

apparently, it’s OK

not sure I have much use for a 6 string bass (let alone the room in my house to keep it) but I am almost tempted just for fun at that price

Were it not for the fact that I already have three six-strings that I very rarely use, have an aversion to buying Fender/Squier, and think that the headstock is probably heavy enough without the pointless testicle dangling from it, it would be quite tempting.

I've never owned a 6 string and have only played a few. I don't know what I'd do with one. And still it IS tempting for the Jazz Bass lover in me.

I think it sounds way better in the video from Empire Music (clearer and more detailed high end) then in Lobster's (harsher highs). Despite what Anthony (EM) claims, I really like how the neck pickup sounds soloed, at least the way he plays it 👍

I’m seriously considering it. I have the rare Steve Bailey 6er by Fender, but feel this would be a good substitute in certain circumstances. Has anyone here purchased one yet? What’s the verdict?

I have one. Just came last week. I'm impressed. Sounds better than expected for this price point. Plays fine. Not really that heavy. Ordered better tuners from Hipshot for it, which came today. I actually like the neck profile. No neck dive. String spacing is fine. Still working with it. But decided it's a keeper. Of course, I also have 2 G&L 5vers coming in as well. So, they'll be taking up a big chunk of my time. I've been searching for a Steve Bailey for years. Frustration as to availability made getting the Squier more desirable. Kinda glad too. Baileys are pushing into the $4k usd these days. I won't take a bass that valuable out to a bar gig. Bad enough I take 2 USA Fenders.

Just ordered one from Thomann for £235. Fancied giving it a try... Not super fussed about the wait though if it goes too much into the new year I'll probably request a refund. Hoping it might be here before Xmas... We shall see!

Great intro to 6 string, and probably not too difficult to shift due to the F word. Hopefully they’ll still be around at a good price next year when I’ve financially recovered from Christmas.

Still gutted I didn’t buy a Squier Vista series Musicmaster when they were selling for £100 in the late 90’s 😂

This is an incredible bass. I have several jazz basses, including the Steve Bailey signature 6, the Marcus Miller MIJ 4, a fretless Squier VM, a Fender MIC modern player, and a few other non-JB fenders. I purchased this out of curiosity, but also because the SB6 is a rare thing that I wanted to keep pristine (so only use for gigs, not practice, to minimise wear and tear). I had pretty lowly expectations having picked up a few Affinity basses in guitar shops over the years.

This is not your run of the mill affinity. The finishing is immaculate on the one I received, the output and tone is comparable to other passive JBs I own. The neck is a slim 12 inch radius, and feels like an Ibanez 6 string. String spacing at the bridge is 17mm, slightly less than the SB6, but as a result feels easier for finger style playing. I’m guessing the tuners and pots might wear quicker than my fender basses, but they are perfectly functional at the moment, and the bass stays in tune. I’ve found the neck on my Squier VM fretless so be a bit flexible (most notable when I am sat back on the sofa noodling), but this thing is as stiff as a board. The finger board was spotless, not dry and no fret sprout. The only adjustment I made was to lower the action at the bridge. The relief on the neck was perfect.

In summary, I’m pretty shocked that Fender are selling this with the Affinity label, at the price point. As a university educator, I was fortunate enough to receive a hefty discount and only paid £205.00, direct from Fender. It really is a crazy bass for crazy money. If their QA is consistent, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this to experienced players that want a genuine 6 string jazz bass, or those wanting to dip their toe into the 6 string world without breaking the bank.

Anyway, I hope this helps. I’ll post some close-up photos when I get a moment. In the meantime here’s a photo I pulled together to compare the size and scale of the SB6 and Squier….

If I didn't have a 6 string I would be very tempted at that price! The headstock is what puts me off though as it's likely to weigh a ton.

Your excuse of already owning a 6 string cannot be accepted! I already have seven 6 strings... I still bought one!
