mike f Posted November 3, 2024 Posted November 3, 2024 This story I’ve repeated elsewhere but I think it’s worth putting on here as well. 2001 Ltd Edition Thumb BO. Sometimes, only sometimes, “the one that got away” swims straight back into your net. I bought this bass in 2003, brand new (despite its year). Gigged with it loads in London, recorded an album.., and then traded it in 2011/12 (not sure) for a Stingray. It quickly went to the top of the list in my head of basses I’d wished I’d never got rid of. And then… it appeared up for sale , on Facebook, this week. Mind blown, messages sent and received, confirmation made, bass purchased. I am so happy. And it’s the beautiful beast of a bass that I remember and with 12 years or so having passed, an instrument I can now appreciate more and make sound even better. 41 Quote
simonlittle Posted November 3, 2024 Posted November 3, 2024 Good to hear you’ve been reunited! I must say there are a couple of basses I’ve sold over the last ten years that I’ve been sorely missing of late. Great that it’s still as good an instrument as you remember too 👍 1 Quote
Lozz196 Posted November 3, 2024 Posted November 3, 2024 Nice one, I bet you’re really pleased, there’s one particular bass I’d like to get back but it went mid-90s so doubt I’d stand any chance at all. 2 Quote

Its actually better than I remember, which has surprised me, in fact the whole series of events leading from seeing it online on my phone (4 days ago) to being sat with it here now has left me a little gob smacked! I am really pleased. And to add to the bass itself it came in my old Bass Centre Hiscox case with the original manual, documents of authentication (it being a limited edition) and paperwork with my own terrible handwriting on it dated March 2003. Keep looking! I thought this one had disappeared over the horizon a long time ago. Edited November 3, 2024 by mike f 5 Quote
BassAgent Posted November 3, 2024 Posted November 3, 2024 Awesome! I know the feeling of "the one that got away". It's so awesome to see that bass back on your wall or in its stand again. 1 Quote
Bernmeister Posted November 7, 2024 Posted November 7, 2024 What a great story. Rekindling a lost love, only to find her again, as beautiful as ever & with your old hiscox case, certificate & documentation too. Can’t beat it. 1 Quote
andruca Posted November 7, 2024 Posted November 7, 2024 Congrats 👏👏👏 Looks nice, well taken care of. Thumbs are not my thing, but a good reunion story definitely is, so THUMBS UP 👍👍 Rock it even harder this time 🤘 1 Quote

Still, I gave it a polish, fretboard too, and put some DRs on it. It sings and it growls! And it will be played hard 👍 Quote
AndyTravis Posted November 7, 2024 Posted November 7, 2024 Very cool. my Casady was my replacement for an old one… Got it brand new and then sold because of some ridiculous stuff… Fate stepped in and I got it back. Like my best mate these days. sold a load of bits and bobs (old HiFi gear and a peavey bass) to a mate last month and agreed a deal on a second one which is imminent… Loved the Thumbs sound, they’re too physically small for me - but love the sound. It’s a great feeling getting an old bass back that you miss. 3 Quote
Cliff Edge Posted November 9, 2024 Posted November 9, 2024 Great story. I would love to get my 1996 Stingray back, which I purchased in Manny’s a couple of weeks after the manufacture date. Sold it on eBay to a lady in Scotland, probably around 2000/2001. Also in a Hiscox case. Quote

Apart from a very nice example it was a wedding anniversary gift to myself. So doubly special. Just in case you all think bad of me, I bought my wife a very nice silver and gold bracelet in Tiffany’s the same day. She still wears it. 1 Quote
mike f Posted November 9, 2024 Author Posted November 9, 2024 @Cliff Edge every cloud… Well now’s the time to put out a full description of it on BC. Someone here might have seen, or be playing it. Maybe Basschat should start a One The Got Away thread where BCers can give a full description of an instrument and where it was last seen. I’d imagine that there’s plenty of us who peruse the internet looking at basses for sale (when we should be practicing!). Might have some success. 2 Quote
