I like my Markbass CMD 121P - I use it in a pretty loud rock band, it's a one handed carry and I've never been told it's too quiet... I rarely have the master volume past about 4.
Used price is usually less than £500.

Forever a lurker, but never a poster... however, I'll add another thumbs up for a Rumble 800 - I've used mine now for the last 5 years across a number of different bands and I rarely go past 70% on the Master, even with a loud drummer in a classic rock covers band... I also have the 212 extension cab, which I did hook up for a couple of gigs that were in larger venues, but it damn well nearly ripped my trousers right off my hairy matchsticks that I decided the combo alone was enough... as such it never gets used.  I'm fortunate enough that for larger gigs we always bring in a sound/lighting company anyway, so I typically DI in and use in-ears for those occasions and let FOH deal with the rest (I still get enough punch/feel from the cab behind me)

I will say however, that the GAS is strong... I'd love to go the other way back to a beefy ABM rig and large cabs to move some air, but the reality is 95% of the time it wouldn't get used :)

There's a couple of GK combos on here that'd do you proud. A 410 @ £700 and a 115 @£555 if memory serves, either of which would sort you out, GK pretty much outclass most stuff on the market for durability and tone, IMO.

Yep, but if O/P's guitarist is using 150w, none of the figures above matter?

I think the problem is that plenty of combos will go loud - i.e., could go even louder - but in my experience most will not sound great doing so. Even the best bass combo ever made - Mesa Walkabout 12 - can struggle when things get messy. OK, it can compete in most situations, but it may not compete in the optimal way (and as far as I'm concerned I don't want my amp to compete I want it to win!). So, I moved from the Walkabout combo which was struggling at times, to the Walkabout head with two Bag End 12 and voila, still an easy load in/out, but both the volume and the tone I was after 👍

I'd disagree, as my volume is only on about a quarter, and it's plenty loud enough (probably even too loud, dare I say it!).

The guitarist used to use a Marshall solid state 150 stereo rig, and the Ashdown was plenty loud enough then. He moved to a 20w valve Marshall head through a 4x12, and again, it's plenty loud enough. Depending on the situation, I may have to raise or lower the volume, but never by very much.
