Unintended Hammer On?

Recommended Posts

I have been recording my playing, trying to decide which bass to use on Saturday and I am really noticing that when I fret on the E string, I get a hammer on before playing the note. It puts an emphasis I do not want. Clearly my technique is crap but how can I avoid it?

I guess I would try finding one or more patterns or riffs that demonstrate the problem and practice them slowly and quietly, with a metronome, concentrating on fretting cleanly and with just enough pressure, so you aren’t banging your LH finger down excessively hard. Then gradually increase the tempo and volume.

I find it’s easy to use too much force with the fretting hand, and something I need to consciously practice out.

Thank you for that and my apologies for the delay in my reply. I think you have got it perfectly. In a gig setting Ingetcaway with it but I use one of @stevie LFSys FRFR cabinets and it’s is as clear as anything. Would playing along to a drum machine be OK?

I can’t see why not.

I’m no teacher btw, just going on my own experience and second-hand experience of my kids learning piano and violin, and ‘practice it slowly’ seems to be the answer to most things.
