The Cure - Songs of a Lost World

I've never been much of a Cure fan, always enjoyed the odd song but not really a fan. I was talked in to listening to their new record and it's blown my tiny mind that a band can come back after a 32 year break from recording with such a great record. It doesn't feel at all like a record to refill bank accounts.

The bass is absolutely killer. Great playing and some amazing tones.

Well, at least I let it run until the end. It sounds as if it's being played under water. Massively over-produced, crowded wall of mud; I've never been a fan of this bloke's voice, either. I watched parts of a 'Cure' series of programmes (Cure at the BBC and the like...) a short while ago, and was not impressed then, either. Not a fan, and not for me, but thanks for sharing. :|

I think it is 16 years since the last album. Maybe 32 since the last good one 😂 I love the Cure. I was lucky to be at the Troxy for the launch gig.

You are (of course) correct. I read that it was 32 years. I guess that makes it less of a triumphant come back.

I'm really enjoying the new album.  I listened to the live BBC radio recording and the bass sound was crazy. I was in the car by myself but still looked round to try and find some to ask how the hell has he got away with that bass distortion.  Like a chain saw having a fight with an army of wasps... brilliant and bonkers at the same time.

It’s great to see a group of friends still enjoying playing music together after four decades (edit Gallop and Smith really), refusing to move with fashion whims, kowtow to big labels or rip off their fans.

This album has really grown on me. The best thing they have done since Disintegration and really heartening to have a band in the twilight of their career produce something so relevant and memorable.

I want to know how he got that sound. There's certainly more than just a cranked SVT and funky EQ going on there.

All ( I think) of the new album played live November 1st + most of their best songs in a 3 hour long concert. They certainly give their fans the money's worth, and posting the concert on YouTube is ace too.

(edit: posted it in the "what are you listening to now" thread but thought it belonged here too.)

I've listened to it several times now. There are quite a lot of reminders of Disintegration, and also of some mid-80s songs I can't quite put my finger on. As is usual, some songs are stronger than others, but when I tried cherry-picking, it didn't seem as satisfactory as I had hoped. So I listen either to all of it in one go, or at least all of Side Two.

I took the opportunity to compare it a lot with Disintegration, and then also with Pornography. I find that neither this new album nor Disintegration remind me in the slightest of Pornography. The latter is angry and in the moment, whereas Dis. and this one are both reflective.

Quality-wise, it's not Disintegration, but then Disintegration isn't Pornography and it's still kept me happy for years. I don't recall ever making it all the way through The Top or Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me in one go, so I guess I'm placing it above them.

I like that "Drone Redrone" reminds me of "Shake Dog Shake", though I'd be hard pressed to justify the resemblance I'm claiming to notice.

(I could live with more guitars and fewer synths, but I've been thinking that since Live In Orange, so that's my own problem. If anyone else feels the same, there's a decent recording of "Fascination Street" on YouTube from Finsbury Park in 1993, when they were briefly keyboardistless. Very nice.)

I've been thinking, who would I recommend this album to? I think the answer is, anyone who enjoys Disintegration. Similar sounds, similar themes, but for a different stage of life. If you don't like Disintegration, don't bother with this. If you don't know Disintegration, start there. And so on.

I have been a fan since the mid 80s and I think for a band to do a record this good, so late into their career is stunning. I have friends who are good friends with the band and this was never about money. To release a first song where the vocal doesn't start for 3 minutes, clearly Robert isn't worried about the TikTok generation.
