I helped my dad’s friend out and he gave me his old amp as a thank you! It’s a beaut! Unfortunately I don’t have room at my place but my folks have it at theirs for when I come over. Very happy chappy!

For double bass?  How's it sound?

Impressive number of knobs regardless.

Nop. Just regular bass. It sounds really lovely though. I’m heading back home tomorrow and leaving it at my parents’ place. Will always be fun to come visit!

OK! ... Just that it's posted in the EUB and DB section 🙂

We 40"+ scale people generally go for characterless and neutral ... which I guess a 1980s marshall is not.

I am such a dufus… or is it a portent? Should I get an EUB?

They’re nice amps, a mate of mine has one and it makes his plywood BC Rich copy sound really good.

Yeah, it has a lovely tone and I’m fascinated by the crossover/biamp feature…

It’s actually a lot sweeter than I’d have thought. Punchy but not sharp. I’d forgotten how nice a 15” cab can be…

Billy Sheehan is of the opinion that a 1x15 is punchier and has more treble than a 4x10, which in my limited experience of those speaker arrangements, I'd agree with.

Awww very lucky!!

I had the head version and ran it in to a 2x15" cabinet (Loaded with Celestion speakers). It was my first "proper" gigging rig and I always had compliments on my tone! It made a good noise! I'm definitely feeling nostalgic for the Marshalls right now!

Wow! I've managed to find an old scan of some pictures that I had of that very rig - though it looks like a speaker was changed at some point. I'm still wondering where that P bass ended up. I last heard it was in a studio in Suffolk somewhere, but it must be a studio that no one goes to as nobody seems to have seen it!

Pictured: Marshall IBS 200W head, the cabinet I think was a Traynor 2x15" and the Precision is a 70's ash body with a 80's '62 AVRI (USA) neck w/ reverse kluson tuners and Dimarzio split coil. Heavy as, but sounded like thunder.

@Dood Marshall IBS - now there's an apt name if ever I saw one 😯

I've managed to send a cold shiver down my own spine as I recall in a moment of madness sharing my health woes with the world. On reflection, I don't think anyone really wanted to know that I am suffering from an incurable disease of the gut. I think I want one of these amplifers as well now just to celebrate the misery!

Yeah I use a Markbass CMD121 and 1x12” cab setup. I find the rig very hifi and does a great job but the Marshall has way more character!

I can see the 2x15” being efficient enough to get the most out of the amp. 200w has to work hard…

I recall that the drivers in my cabinet might not have been that efficient, so, for gigging I was nearing the limits of what the stack could dish out when needing the extra volume. I also think that as a teen I had a bit to learn about EQ'ing - but boy did it sound good!

Oh, blimey, I wish someone had explained EQ to me when I was a youth...

One question though (I can't check this myself as the amp is now in Wales and I'm in London), it has bass and treble outputs. If I were to, say, plug another amp into just one of the outputs, what would the internal 200W amp be doing? Would it be full frequency or just the bass signal? Becuase I'm thinking - if I plugged a guitar amp into the HF output and cranked up the distortion I could recreate the two-rig setup at bedroom volumes! Just wondering... and plotting!

If you connect a guitar amplifer to the treble output, the bass side of the crossover is still sent to the internal amplifer, thus you can do exactly as you'd described. furthermore, using the crossover, you can sculpt the crossover point to decide how much of the signal goes to the combo or the external amplifer. Plugging an amplifer in to just the bass output acts as a full range slave, sending the same signal to both the internal amplifer and external device.

You'll be safe even running a full range (instrument level) signal in to a distorted guitar amplifer, as nearly all with drive channels have a High Pass Filter at the input by design that will also filter out bass and sub frequencies.
