We saw the final flight of the Vulcan a few years back. Several thousand people rammed onto a cold beach in north Kent. People were tracking the flight on their phones, and it suddenly went quiet. Everyone looked left to see an ominous - almost buzzard like - shape baking over the Thames estuary.

It flew towards us and banked left showing the crowd the awesome silhouette/profile (and bomb doors). The entire crowd was silent, still, and tense until it had flown another 20 second or so, allowing us to experience the blast of the engines. At that moment, no joke or exaggeration, several thousand people were struggling to hold it together, there were Dad's trying to pretend not to cry to their kids, kids screaming with excitement at each other, and a few older folks for whom this was the end of an era proudly letting the tears fall. It was a pretty unexpected and powerful moment.

You can even see the Vulcan/Buzzard similarity....

Incidentally, a great place to see one of the old Vulcan bombers (amongst many other old beauties) is the Imperial War Air Museum at Duxford, near Cambridge.   No longer flying I think, sadly, but the sheer size of these beasties up close, and their sleekly functional if rather menacing beauty, is amazing.

There's one at the RAF Museum in Hendon too - we saw it a couple of weeks ago.

I don't know who these people are but they're standing underneath it, which gives you some idea of the vast size of the thing.

Yep, they were designed to intimidate as much as to operate. It works. When we saw the final flight, the image that came to mind as I watched it bank towards the shoreline was of the battle dragons in the Lord of the Rings movies, it really is a very ominous shape in flight, and provokes some fairly primeval emotions 🦅

At Cosford, they have a Vulcan, a Victor and a Valiant.

I'll have to check that out!   Can't remember exactly what they have at IWM Duxtord; used to be there frequently whenever I visited my folks in Cambridge as my youngest was nuts about the place.  Best known for their WW2 aircraft still in flying condition (mainly Spitfires).   I think the 2 planes they have that impressed me the most were the US "Blackbird" high altitude stealth bomber - it looks created by some alien technology - and the BAC TSR-2 fighter / bomber - a UK project developed in the 1960's but shelved by the British government when the plane was pretty much fully developed.   Generally regarded as "the best plane the RAF never had" and even today looks cleanly graceful and futuristic.

(edit: apologies for derailing the thread, Chris.  And  I'm sure your bass was not created by an alien technology.  well fairly sure.....)

I think a BC Bash at Duxford and Cosford in in order?

We tend to hit the Folkestone show each year as my wife's Mum live's right under it, and two or three years back they had a Victor. Man, it was impressive, not Vulcan impressive, but up there. Those Cold War designs were extraordinary

I reckon a bass of this calibre deserves far better than Rotosounds 🤣

So I have a set of DR Lo Riders lined up, purely because last time i used them on a graphite neck they went very very low without problems, so I'm going to start there and see the lie of the land tone and playability wise. Next few weeks I'm going to be spending some time with my cherished copy of this I imagine.....

I think for the "stealth" look you need DR Black Beauties........

Actually, genuinely really great strings!

DRs! Fantastic. My choice of string, I've never played better. Not tried to Lo Riders, I usually use Hi Beams.

What is it they say on Talkbass - woodshedding? Enjoy your time in the woodshed!

You know how when you're so familiar with a band, you can find yourself not listening to them so often? That's me and The Who. This thread (and your other one) has sent me right back into them. Pure rock fury. Nothing ever came close.

JE's a player I understand. If I had those songs put to me, those are the lines I'd play, at least the technically simpler ones. I'd love to be able to think like Flea or Zender or many of the great funk players, or play fretless as lyrically as Bakithi Kamalo or Mick Karn, or just hold it al down like Deacon or Macca, but I think at heart I'm an ill disciplined rock player, and the sheer joy I get from playing JE's lines makes this bass 100% worth it, one thing I am sure of is that it is going to have very little trouble finding its way through the mix 👍

I couldn't have put it better myself. "Ill-disciplined rock player" - that's me to a tee 😆 I'm not that good at just holding down the low end... it's more fun to play 10 notes instead of 2. Made my years in pub covers bands a bit interesting though...

For me, Entwistle will always be the ultimate bass guitarist, and my greatest teacher, as I literally learnt to play bass by listening to and copying him. The Guv'nor.

IIRC the original line to The Real Me was played in a single take which JE was sure Townsend would reject as being overly complex and disorganised

Man, what a take......

My favourite JE track by miles. I was shocked when I heard it in isolation, but it’s not meant to be heard that way, it’s part of the track, albeit, apart from the vocals, the main part of the track.

Sadly this is going to have to go back to the seller, I mentioned some issues with the circuit above, and it's transpired they're slightly more substantial than I initially thought, plus it seems that - according to Rob at Status - the circuit in question is likely not the original (which might explain why it doesn't work). Sadly the seller has adopted a "f*** off, you bought it" approach to negotiations and is not prepared to meet me half way on the cost of fixing the problem, so I have no real choice 😡

If the bass is nice, electronics should be replaceable. Do you think Rob would help you with 300-series electronics, maybe?

Agreed, I'm talking to Rob but I'm not sure I should be shelling out for a new circuit and installation (as well as travel costs and time) having been told by the seller it was all working fine and having since been completely blanked by him. His name's going on this site if he doesn't change his mind, he's a bass guitar dealer on Reverb....

Nothing worse than- I bought a Yamaha Attitude about 6 years ago, the dealer hand delivered it and when I took it out there were a few issues (albeit minor but undisclosed) and I’d paid over the odds to get the specific one…

He was then in my house sort of refusing to leave…

Really odd. He gave me £300 back.

But the bass didn’t stay and I sold it for exactly what I’d paid (which made it a bargain for someone else who was beans chuffed with his purchase)

Even though the bass was lovely and perfectly serviceable; the ownership was tainted.

In hindsight…I wouldn’t let that poor buying experience dampen what was a lovely bass…and now they’re selling £300-£400 more than I paid so I won’t get another.

But I’d never buy from that outfit again - he has about 5 different names on eBay/reverb and Facebook. Based in Scotland.

It’s a shame the seller is being a cockwomble - but if there’s enough in the bass to persevere; I’d push on and enjoy it knowing it’s fully sorted…and from a resale point of view - you’ll know it’s kosher should you decide to sell on.

Sorry to hear of your issues Chris - hopefully a good outcome and lots of fun to be had once it’s corrected.
