Nothing worse than- I bought a Yamaha Attitude about 6 years ago, the dealer hand delivered it and when I took it out there were a few issues (albeit minor but undisclosed) and I’d paid over the odds to get the specific one…

He was then in my house sort of refusing to leave…

Really odd. He gave me £300 back.

But the bass didn’t stay and I sold it for exactly what I’d paid (which made it a bargain for someone else who was beans chuffed with his purchase)

Even though the bass was lovely and perfectly serviceable; the ownership was tainted.

In hindsight…I wouldn’t let that poor buying experience dampen what was a lovely bass…and now they’re selling £300-£400 more than I paid so I won’t get another.

But I’d never buy from that outfit again - he has about 5 different names on eBay/reverb and Facebook. Based in Scotland.

It’s a shame the seller is being a cockwomble - but if there’s enough in the bass to persevere; I’d push on and enjoy it knowing it’s fully sorted…and from a resale point of view - you’ll know it’s kosher should you decide to sell on.

Sorry to hear of your issues Chris - hopefully a good outcome and lots of fun to be had once it’s corrected.

Thanks Andy 🙏

No stress - think I threw my toys out of the pram, it was around the time Iris had been in and out of hospital a fair bit, stressed with work etc so I just wanted it gone.

In retrospect, cutting my nose off to spite my face…

Can’t wait to see/hear it fully sorted! Xx

I'm sorry - the seller was in your house?!

Yeah - he drove down with the bass as he was delivering a PRS guitar to a guy in Stoke so stopped with me.

I wanted to check the bass over - up until that point everything had been fine.

I inspected the bass - pointed out several issues (a chip, a split from machine head to edge of headstock - the fact it was feckin dirty and strings were brown - all stuff I could sort but shouldn’t have to at the original price) he then started chatting absolute shite like I was a 5 year old who’d never seen a bass etc. He then said “well I’m not leaving with the bass”.

I basically laid cards on table “either you refund me, take the bass and f*** off - you give me £300 back and f*** off or I shove this bass up your arse sideways - take your pick”

Jenny actually uttered “Jesus Trav” as I wasn’t in a good headspace. I actually could’ve dealt with it a lot better than I did.

Maybe I was the bad guy in it all…

I’m much calmer in my 40’s.

To be fair - I know I’ve said I wouldn’t buy from him again; I doubt he’d ever sell to me again.

Sadly this is going to have to go back to the seller, I mentioned some issues with the circuit above, and it's transpired they're slightly more substantial than I initially thought, plus it seems that - according to Rob at Status - the circuit in question is likely not the original (which might explain why it doesn't work). Sadly the seller has adopted a "f*** off, you bought it" approach to negotiations and is not prepared to meet me half way on the cost of fixing the problem, so I have no real choice 😡

Really sorry to hear that Chris; I know you were right in the zone there where as musicians we want and try to be, and that's just unnecessarily spoiled it.  Hope you get it properly sorted, and preferably amicably.

If you have to move onto another bass though, at the very least this seems to have shown you the direction that you want to go.

No, you were definitely not "the bad guy".

Live and learn, and I wish I'd been that assertive in a couple of deals that I've had (non-Basschat, of course) :scratch_one-s_head:

Your manner may have been a trifle brusque but you were in the right.  Sounds like the seller was a right villain.

My favourite thing about this is finding out your wife calls you "Trav".

I'm really sorry that the Buzzard isn't going to be staying, but I sincerely hope the Who covers project is still going ahead.

As an Entwistle fan myself, one of the great things about trying to copy his lines is, if you haven't got an Alembic or Status, you can always do a rendition on a P Bass with a new set of Rotosound strings. Even the material from after JE's P Bass era is eminently suited to that tone.

I traded for a dreamy Warwick thumb on here and completely the trade at Waterloo train station. Unfortunately there was no way of really knowing the truss rod was shot at that point.

seller denied the truss rod had gone, so I had to lump out for the bass gallery to fix it.

A lesson learned but I still had a rare (not so compared to your buzzard) bass in my hands and it was wonderful when fixed.

Your bass is special enough to persevere with IMO and if the seller is being a sh*t, don’t put much time into them and leave yourself stressed. Walk away, like our friend who has ordered a Letts bass should have done.

@itu @AndyTravis @Shaggy @Misdee @Cosmo Valdemar @Mickeyboro @OliverBlackman many thanks for your posts, much appreciated 👍

There is a lot of anger tied up in this, and yes there shouldn't be and I need to let that go.

There are at least two faults with the circuit, one of which leads to it completely cutting out occasionally, so it's not usable in a band situation as is. The other is that the mid circuit doesn't work through more than around 20% of it's range which is frustrating as one of the things that really attarcted me to this bass was some comments online about how powerful that function/circuit is on stage. To be confident that I have a reliable bass I suspect it's going to need a replacement Status circuit at the very least, and I don't think they stock the circuit in question (and Rob has suggested that they're not taking in repair work at present).

But this stuff happens, the anger is not that, it's that the seller has simply refused to respond in any meaningful way, refusing to make any contribution towards making it right (and I suspect we're looking at a few hundred quid here at least). I made a partial claim of a couple of hundred pounds through Reverb which he simply rejected without comment, so I then made a full claim, in part in the hope that when confronted with a reversal of the deal and full refund he might at least engage. However I'm starting to realise out that while eBay tend to side with the buyer, Reverb's process is tortuous and illogical and appears designed to put buyers off claiming for damage/not as described etc 😡

Sadly I'm going to think twice about using Reverb in future also :(

If I lived closer, I'd be happy to check the circuitry. If only the pots, and 9 V lines are defect, the repairing takes maybe two, three hours: removing the preamp, some analysis, soldering... As said, this bass is special and should be fixed to its glory.

To my sensibilities the bottom line would be that unless this bass is sorted out either by Rob at Status or another top luthier such as Martin Peterson armed with the correct replacement parts, I would never be happy with it.

Chris has acted in good faith throughout, and been left sucking lemons. I've been treated similarly badly in the past myself, so I can really relate to the anger and frustration.

I'm going to keep this, in part because despite the problems it's an incredible piece of engineering and I won't find another anytime soon, in part because I don't want the hassle of dealing with a shitty seller (and BTW Reverb have handled this very poorly), and in part because I'm going to enjoy fixing it. While the financially sensible thing to do is to get the circuit repaired, given I'm not convinced the bass was all that well maintained, I don't think I'll feel fully happy unless a new circuit is installed. I was hoping that Status might be able to supply/build a replica of the original but having been initially quite responsive they've gone very quiet which is frustrating. So I'm guessing there are a few options from here.

Re the earlier comment about size, check this out.....

Oooohhhh it’s a biggun…

It's huge but sits perfectly and plays so easily. It's Modulus Flea territory with a little more versatility and, dare I say it, a little more heft (can a bass have heft or is it just amplification....?).

Thanks for your earlier posts Andy, helped a lot 👍

Glad you're keeping it.

There can't be too many of these about, and it's disappointing that someone who had it, didn't maintain it as they are amazing bits of craftsmanship. If you can get it back to full working order, you're preserving a wee bit of British luthier history, so definitely worth doing.

Hopefully it will prove to be a great decision. I wonder if someone like JohnEast could help with the circuit?

Have you tried the Statii forum?

Thanks guys, I'm hoping to have some luck with Status but slow progress at present, which I get. I registered with the Statii forum - or tried to - ands am just getting this...

I’m pretty sure the Statii forum closed down a few years ago I’m afraid :(

There’s a group on BookFace which may be of use, assuming you too are on BookFace… I could ask if you are not!
