How do you say flanger?

A mate at work is starting to play the bass so I’m lending him some things to play with, including effects. I mentioned a flanger to him the other day and he laughed at my pronunciation which I have always used. I don’t like flangers so haven’t ever seen videos or talked about them before so I guess I haven’t heard it said properly. 
 

I say Flanjer sort of, whereas he says Flanger rhyming with Hanger. 
 

Tell me he’s wrong so I can throw it in his face tomorrow

That’s right, I did suggest that the word flange isn’t pronounced ‘flang’ but he was having none of it.

It’s the “j” sound. Flanger comes from the way the effect was originally produced, which was by running two simultaneous tapes containing identical audio then physically pressing on the flange (rim) of the tape reel of one machine so that it slowed down, creating a slight delay, which in turn causes sum-and-difference frequency effects.

Well a flanger is meant to simulate playing two tape recordings side by side and slowing one down by dragging on the flange of the tape reel.

 

So do you pronounce 'flange*' as 'flanj' or 'flang'?

It would be even more delirious, it would be "Flanjehrrr", with the stress on the last syllable, especially in Paris where it would even become "Flanjehrrreh". 🤦

I've heard it should be pronounced Mogue, but then they go and bring out a Moogerfooger!  ...surely that's designed to be said 'Moo' and 'Foo'?
