deadline
Hi! I need a new compressor pedal, a dirt pedal and possibly a preamp. I play mostly old skool pop music, new wave, and a little bit of punk. My bass of choice is the Fender Musicmaster, with one pickup and nothing else. I was thinking about combining the small Aguilar DB 599 compressor, with the DB 925 preamp, as I really like simple things with as few knobs and wheels as possible. I was also thinking about getting the Darkglass Vintage Microtubes for fuzz. i know this topic is highly subjective and all that, but am I on the right track? Any input (excuse the pun) is highly apprecitated!
PinkMohawk
Those all look like solid choices to me. The only additions I'd make are a tuner pedal, though obviously if you've got one already just use that, and a chorus pedal, just for some of that new wave vibe, depending on what kind of stuff you're playing. Other than that, just make sure you've got it all on a board and a decent power supply, and you're laughing.
SumOne
The only one of those I've used is the vintage microtubes, I don't remember it going up into Fuzz levels of distortion though - was milder. Buying and selling second hand via Basschat is a good way of trying a lot of pedals with not necessarily much cost. I find you need to try them as it is all quite subjective and depends on your other equipment.
deadline
Thanks a lot for the replies. Already got the Microtubes the other day, and I really enjoy the vintage vibes on the fuzz.
Lozz196
From the demos I’ve seen of the Aguilar DB599 compressor it sounds really good.
jimbobothy
The Aguilar 925 Preamp is boost only, sounds nice but I prefer the Sadowsky SBP 2 preamp as it also has a volume control (so you can switch between having the preamp on/off with no volume change. The Aguilar DB 599 is okay for a small footprint comp. One thing I’ve noticed is that at full compression the gain control doesn’t boost the volume back up to unity gain. With the gain on full, at least with my setup, unity is reached with the comp at around 2 O’clock. Any more comp results in a volume drop. I have loads of compressors, and even though I’m an Analouge fan at heart, the TC Electronic Spectracomp is a firm favourite of mine.. It can be as simple or complex as you want (it has one knob, can use Toneprints and you can edit using a computer if you so desire).
