A fun thing I learnt when doing a relic job - dissolve some wire wool in vinegar and wipe it across the "worn" areas. Makes it look less new pretty instantly.

Teabags …

Slighty sanitised tribute version. Can only assume to remaining pickguard covers the PUP-control wiring cavity, and leads to/joins an EBMM Sabre-style control plate. This version to my eye does the job without the need for gaffa tape that, frankly, would be trying just a little too hard! perhaps there's a little too much relicing by comparison with the photo above, but there are later photos where the finish does appear to be largely gone :)

It’s not that accurate … the real thing has a jazz bass neck with logo

Congratulations on getting the gig.

I know people have a pop at Clayton's uncomplicated bass lines and Larry Mullen's straightforward drumming but they are the perfect rhythm section for that band and those songs.

Lock in with the drummer, let the guys up front go wherever they need to, and  everyone will have a great time. Nobody other than bass players and obsessives will even notice what bass you're using 😉

When and where are you playing?

I’m not sure they’re always that simple, have a listen to Love comes tumbling

@police squad - you need one of these....if you can find one.

(photo credit @molan from when it was his. It's now mine and no, it's not for sale. Barrie might be able to elaborate, but my understanding is that this bass was previously owned by the bass player in a U2 tribute band. The pick-up's were hand wound by now retired Fender employee Abigail Ybarra and man are they lively. A P bass with a J neck is not to everyone's taste and sacrilege to some, but to me, it's just perfection.)

again, that's epic. What colour is it?

I am going down this path to start with. I have a jazz neck with those kind of block on order atm

I may repurpose my Police red fretless bass with a paint job and this neck

I completely agree, but it seems a lot of people dismiss him and Mullen as not that good, just because they aren't flash.

Ah but there’s plenty more who think they are just brilliant.
I will never stop marvelling at Bad live (even if I’m convinced that Adam’s last lick is an overdub!). 😁

It’s gold sparkle. Not easy to work with I understand, but looks fantastic under stage lights.

U2 are a big target for musical snobbery across the board, some of the stuff I’ve seen written about the Edge is pathetic.

I’m not sure if it’s jealousy behind it all. On the surface some of their music seems fairly simple, so I think people dismiss it as ‘I could do that easily’.

I’ve never understood it at all, they’ve written more great songs than most people have had hot dinners!

A lot of people dislike bono and write off the band for their association. U2 are without doubt one of the all time greats, their longevity and back catalogue are extraordinary. Listening to Boy and War seems like another lifetime they're so long ago, but both still powerful albums

I think an awful lot of people, particularly musicians, forget how important this is.

I'm not a huge fan of U2 (especially Bono who's a real pain in the āss) for sure, but what I always like is their simple and effective rhythm section as it's what makes a song great.

Remove the bass lines from their tunes and they'll sound bland, but as I said earlier any bass will do the job, except for the look.

Some good friends of mine have a U2 cover band (Ultraviolet) for more than 3 decades and it's always a pleasure to go and listen to them.

In fact, they are like the original band: Real friends from the start, and it's great seeing them playing TOGETHER.

They are like a family.

That said, the guitar player almost ruined himself buying stuff to sound exactly like The Edge ... I still remember his early years having that massive rack higher than a fridge to get all guitar sounds needed, now a Helix or another equivalent pedalboard is doing the job.

The bass player has quite a lot of Adam Clayton's signature basses and amps too, but it's his thing.
