The Joshua tree stuff was inspired by US touring during war and unforgettable fire tours

That makes sense, thanks. Rattle & Hum feels very American at times also 👍

Inspired by this thread, I'm listening to U2 today, and have to say what a damn fine listen it is, especially if you're a fan of solid power bass playing.

It might just be the random playing order, but I'd never noticed before just how Americana they sounded mid-late 80s?

Great gig though @police squad, I'm going to try to get to the Kent leg 👍

great, we can have a beer together

Love to 👍

I have further good news, I just heard some fretless (surprised me as well), that's gotta be another two basses?

I was going to repurpose my fretless, new neck and paint job

is there fretless on any of the songs in the set list I posted

That means I'll need rounds and flats, I've lost count now. 6 basses to every gig?

It is, Bullet the blue sky is about Central America then, and American involvement

fireflies are helicopter gunships and so on. In gods country about the contradictions in the American way and so on

Nope, no fretless on U2 I'm afraid. Adam also played a 51 P Bass occasionally and a Thunderbird but not really as a live instrument.

The Troubles on Songs of Innocence sounds very fretless to me?

I agree, it does a little but I just watched a live recording of it and it seems like its either the Edge playing those little slide parts or its a backing track.

Live and studio, two different worlds 👍

Defo FL or FL-alike in the studio, very un-Clayton either way :)

He did play fretless on the video for Night and Day but its probably just for looks rather than actual.

Intentionally. If I understood correctly, they wanted to grow beyond their post-punk / new wave niche (which is my favourite stuff of theirs) to have a wider appeal, which meant breaking the American market.

Personally, not a fan of the stuff after Unforgettable Fire other than a couple songs off Joshua Tree.

The Joshua Tree is one of my favourite ever records and you’re bang on about the Americana sound. From listening to interviews over the years it seems like U2 have always had a strange relationship with the US and find the place a bit of an enigma. On one hand you’ve got unbelievable scenery, amazing music, a melting pot of cultures, the American dream etc and on the other hand corruption, politics and the military involvement in a lot of places, especially around Central America during the 70s/80s.

The amount of space in the songs on that record is perfect, Adam Clayton's basslines are always serving the song and none of them feel overblown, just the right amount of everything. Brian Eno had a lot do do with that I think.

I've won 3 P bass bodies from the Chris Cross sale at Gardiner Holgate.

These will be duly filled and sprayed in the metal flake gold and purple.

I'll try and relic the sunburst body to get that beaten up P bass too

I suggest a bradle for the little pock marks, I found the back of a kitchen knife effective at removing paint from body edges, rub used teabags on exposed wood
