U2 tribute band needs new bassist, a question for you all

Aesthetically, a purist INXS fan (likely also a bassist) might think a Warwick is not the 'right' bass but he dicked around with lots of other stuff (just like A Clayton really).  I suppose it has to look AND sound right.  

 

I've been a long time INXS and GGB fan and for mostly live, he's played a sunburst P-Basses. However, recorded he used a Steinberger bass which he would use occasionally live.

Yep, pretty much my thoughts and why I auditioned with a burst P bass.   

 

Looking at videos from over the years GGB seems to have dabbled with other brands but keeps reverting back to a P bass (black or burst); lots of parallels with A Clayton, though GGB went on to produce his own as opposed to taking more sponsorship.

Yep, I grew up listening to U2, INXS, Simple Minds and Talk Talk so a lot of similarities. The bass tone on INXS - Listen Like Thieves and the second verse of The Original Sin are amazing, so crunchy.

I think you’ve joined my old band! I was with them before the guy with the Ricky. I used the Warwick reverso (much less expensive then) and I got a fender classic 70s Jazz (it had the blocks) and had it refinished in Sherwood Green. I was with them for a couple of years - it was good fun! Enjoy!

Sometimes, you just gotta go on stage and make a statement, my old blue sparkle Modulus Flea being a great example, not a bass for all gigs, but at the right gig there's nothing like pulling out something special 👍

Very true, my acrylic light-up bass got a run out at tonight's open mic night and will also do a few songs on Saturday's gig.

He has variously claimed it to be a 73 and a 75. It originally had a rosewood neck but he had the neck changed to maple jazz as he couldn’t see it properly in the dark and preferred the slimmer neck, calling it “more ladylike”

you can see the neck quite narrow at the nut in that photo. The red has faded a lot, though that’s hardly uncommon 

 

I always thought the pickguard was black but it’s actually dark tort 

 

he claims to have been given it by his parents after “under a blood red sky” when he was playing an Ibanez of some sort and before Joshua tree so sometime around 1984

In my quest for basses

Neck from ebay 70 quid, its actually very pretty wood and has set up well

Was trying to get the colour metal flake gold but has come out way too dark. The metal flake is nice but I was told to use a black base coat

Hopeless 

So first gig tomorrow

The anoraks should spot p bass with a jazz neck

Would have to be a permanent anorak wearer to spot what neck is on your bass from the front row. Don't expect them to number 1 at at your shows.

 

Play your lines by finger memory and rock out soaking it all in. Good times.
