lurksalot
🎄 December Cover Song Challenge 🎄 As is tradition, we're doing something a bit different for December... so instead of composing to a photo, we're running a covers competition. Basically, choose a song or instrumental that you like and write your own version of it. You can be faithful to the original or completely ruin it and get creative; the choice is yours. All of the usual rules apply with a few additional caveats: 🎅 It doesn't have to be a Christmas song. 🎅 You're welcome to submit anything recorded this year (not just from December), so there's no excuse for those of you in cover bands not to enter. 🎅 Don't go lifting any samples from whatever song you intend to cover, as that will breach the usual terms and conditions leading to extreme punitive measures. 🎅 This is the only time of year that bagpipes are allowed! But that still doesn't make them right. The deadline for entries is midnight on December 23rd.

lurksalot
I had an idea , and lo, auto tune, should save the day , Lurksalittle might even contribute some harmonies. She has heard my practice warbling and isn’t overly disturbed by it , she thinks the lyrics suit my personality to a tee. In fact, it’s not far off done , I usually draw a blank until the last minute and then rush it , this time it won’t be such a panic, but that doesn’t mean the playing or production will be any better 😂
upside downer
Obscure mid-60s garage rock will be my offering this Yule. I'm hoping to get the singer from my old band to do the warbling on it.
MoonBassAlpha
I've got one in progress. For a short tune it's got a lot in it. I thought it would be quick and simple. Nah , 'taint!
Leonard Smalls
Finito! Famed conductor Leo von Klein's iconoclastic punk re-working of Cage's contemplative masterwork, 4'33". Soloist (piano) - Leonardo di Piccolo. Recorded live at the church of St. Dogfan, Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant by Mr. Leonard Smalls, BBC, PTFE, LdPE. Edit: annoyingly, Soundcloud feel that I have nicked bits of Lamento by Martin Andreas Paulus and I've had to file a claim! I'd never heard of this Paulus chap and the only resemblance seems to be that Lamento starts with some atmos and an orchestra tuning. After that, they do some music-y stuff, and I don't! Edit 2: They've reinstated it! Edited December 11 by Leonard Smalls
lurksalot
Bummer , that SoundCloud thing could prove an issue while we are posting covers , though we haven’t noticed it before. i guess that’s AI doing the VAR and making a hash of it 😁
Dad3353
I'm struggling with this, as I don't know how to play 'songs', so have nothing really to 'cover'. I've decided that my version of the Mickey Baker exercises from his method book is as close as I'll get, but it's proving to be more tasking than I thought, and much more difficult than simply composing my own stuff. I hope I get something ready before the guillotine, though. I had advice from Our Eldest last night on EQ and Fx for what I've got down presently. Apparently my hearing is properly 'shot'; I can't hear the cymbals after he EQ'ed my drum track, saying that they were deafening, and he suggested 1db adjustments for reverb 'wet' levels. For me, the minimum is 3db to hear any difference at all..! Oh dear. I think I'll be clear of any risk of plagiarism, though. Never mind; onward and upward, it'll all come out in the wash, in for a penny, etc... Edited December 10 by Dad3353

I've just asked Our Youngest if he'd be willing to play one of the bass lines..! Great minds, or what..? Our Eldest could indeed play guitar, but would it fit this here Mickey Baker stuff..? Hmm... Might be worth a shot. Can't be any worse than different to Lenny, Shirley.
upside downer
A worrying development, chaps. I was hoping to get an old band mate of mine to sing on my festive tune. Sent the rough demo over last week for him to add the vocals to but, as yet, nowt back from him. Have tried contacting him today, got a text with 'I'll call you later' but, so far, no further chat. Looks like I could end up having to do the vox myself, which no one with functioning ears deserves. We can but hope he springs into action forthwith. Bloody singers! This month I've only blessed y'all with an A played on a piano, my dulcet Elvis tones thanking the audience plus lots of various ambiences, some recorded by me and some from Freesound.. But I could have subjected the world to something phat and phunky and liberally smeared with my "singing". Or some crazed pseudo-jazz. Or a punk cover of some tat by Jefferson Starship...

MoonBassAlpha
I was wondering why my cover sounds so different to the 1968 original ( apart from the obvious), then it struck me. The original is in MONO! So, should I go MONO or bring it up to 70s modernity and be all stereo and that?

upside downer Posted Wednesday at 22:28 Share Posted Wednesday at 22:28 Jingle bells, Batman smells, Robin laid an egg etc. I've done a cover of a song by the 60s garage rock outfit The Sparkles, although it's based more on the version performed by The Tribe in 1990. The good news is that I'm not singing on it 😁 the singer from my old band has belted out a fine vocal for it. Westfield Les Paul copy, Westfield P-bass copy, Yamaha keys, MT Drums. Wavepad, Audacity and Ableton do what they usually do.
MoonBassAlpha Posted Thursday at 18:19 Share Posted Thursday at 18:19 (edited) This tune is for the BassChat December 2024 Cover Challenge. Fire Brigade is a tune I've known and loved since it came out. I would have been 6 or 7 This year I have enlisted the help of the following lovely friends: Dan Coggins, pedal designer extraordinaire, 12 string Electric guitars (Rickenbacker and Gordon Smith), Godin and Eggle Electric guitars. Matt Sewell, Lead vocals x3 Phil Beavis, Piano glissando I did the drums, bass, backing vocals and Tambourine myself. You can tell! I had a poorly wrist. 60s psychedelia, love it! lurksalot Posted Friday at 08:24 Author Share Posted Friday at 08:24 Mine is very nearly ready , lurksalittle has recorded some superb extra vocals, but I had a bit of a production problem last night. For some reason the left and right channels seem to have flipped. I must’ve done something and I can’t work out what it was, anyway, researching it for about 40 minutes last night, I still couldn’t suss it out. I got up this morning went to my computer and put the headphones on the right way round ..DOH !
